PlayStation 2's use the emotion engine as a processor, which was removed from PS3s to save money.

This killed off PS2 backwards compatibility, but Sony has a new software solution.

A patent filed by Sony has a method for the cell processor to emulate the emotion engine which can bring PS2 backwards compatibility to all PS3s.

To quote: There are two main ways to emulate hardware. Interpretation is when target code is decoded and converted into a language the host can understand. The other strategy is to decode and recompile programs in the host’s language.

Maybe the concept is better explained another way. Interpretation is like having someone constantly translating English to Japanese for you, non stop, twenty four hours a day wherever you go. Decoding and recompiling is like someone translating a sets of words and putting them in a dictionary you can reference.

Sony developed a way to translate instructions from an ... More »

During in interview with Eurogamer, Take-Two's Ben Feder discussed some minor details about Rockstar's upcoming PlayStation 3 exclusive: Agent.

During Sony's press conference the only announcement made was that the game was, indeed, going to be made with the Sony system in mind, but it was mysteriously without images or the slightest of details.

To quote: Ben said that the series is its own franchise entirely, which is something that led to the decision to make it a platform exclusive. They wanted to make sure it got users' attention - a promise that an exclusive title certainly carries. When asked about the initial comparisons to Grand Theft Auto, his answer was a bit more cryptic.

"It's a completely different storyline, there is completely different character development. It's a game about espionage, set in the 1970s. GTA is obviously more about an urban e... More »

A novel transcoding tool Fixstars (PDF) allows for the conversion of video material on the Full HD format, with the help of a PlayStation 3 in real time, is coming in June 2009.

To quote, roughly translated: The conversion of video footage in Full HD movies at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 provides current desktop CPUs with a lengthy task. This allows the transcoding of a movie sometimes half a day.

In comes Linux Developer Fixstars with a video converter called CodecSys CE-10, which was to encode movies into MPEG-4-AVC format (H.264)

The Cell processor uses a PlayStation 3 - this format will be predominantly on Blu-ray media or IP-TV via video-stream uses. The CE-10-encoder sends out from a Windows PC, the output data via Ethernet to the console, which finishe... More »

We just received a link leading to an AMD-sponsored YouTube channel, showing an HD video how Brian McLachlan [alias chew*] overclocked Phenom II 955 and DDR3 memory. You can see the HD video below.

What caught our attention in the video was the fact that Brian didn't take the usual route of slapping a LN2 pot and pouring Liquid-nitrogen from the word go.

Chew* used AMD Phenom II 955 processor, GigaByte 790FX-based motherboards [MA790FXT-UD5P], Corsair DDR3-1866 memory, ATI Radeon HD 4850 and 4890 graphics cards in single and Crossfire mode. In this video, chew* posted 4515 MHz CPU-Z using an air cooler, 5217 MHz CPU-Z score using Dry Ice and 6405 MHz using Liquid Nitrogen.

Personally, I am not very interested in seeing validation screenshots, even though I understand their point. I was always an stable system overclocker - my CPUs have to pass a 24 hour Linpack run in orde... More »

Hardware requirements are always a concern among PC consumers since manufacturers scrounge to put the lowest possible hardware specs while still promising all the bells and whistles on them.

Something tells us this might not be the case with Windows 7 though.

To quote: Back in January, Windows 7 Beta came out with the first preliminary hardware specifications. Based on feedback given by the owners of various systems, Microsoft firmed hardware requirements with the recently shipped RC version.

According to Microsoft, minimum hardware specs for running Windows 7 are as follows: 1GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 16GB of disc space for 32-bit version, 20GB for 64-bit version and a DirectX9-compliant graphics card.

This means almost every PC manufactured after September 2002 should run Windows 7 - something that we haven't seen in the past. If this is true, owners of older comput... More »
