246w ago - When the PlayStation Network launched in 2006, many saw it as a sea of untapped potential, but Jon Webb from the SCEA Developer Support Group says Sony's made strides to correct that and that now it's up to developers to capitalize.
Webb spoke today at GDC about the PSN's past, present, and future. While a lot of the discussion focused on the nuts and bolts of running the service for the 20 million registered users, Webb did talk about all the improvements the company added to the PSN last year.
Sure, a lot of lip service was paid to Trophies and the in-game cross media bar, but Webb said there are a wealth of other options the late '08 upgrade added that developers didn't drop into their games because of time constraints; the PSN booster shot came about halfway through the year and that didn't bode well for adding functionality to the holiday releases.
What beauts are hiding under the PS3's hood? Well, Webb says the PSN currently supports voting systems, integration of external media sources from the web (He mentioned pulling Twitter photos into a game.), location-specific information based on your IP, group functions such as clubs and club challenges, and in-game ads.
Web also detailed the ability for drop "socially based commerce recommendations" into games so that...
257w ago - We're all looking forward to God of War III on PS3, and are especially excited by the prospect of taking Kratos on a Cell processor powered adventure through Hell.
But it seems there's one person in the world who's more excited than everyone else, and that's Fallout 3 lead producer Gavin Carter.
Speaking on the official PlayStation Web site, Carter said he was most looking forward to upcoming instalments of PlayStation series that haven't seen a true next generation debut, and chief among these is God of War and Final Fantasy.
He said: "Everything I've seen on the new Final Fantasy games has looked fantastic, and I feel faint when I think of the potential of a PS3 God of War game."
High praise indeed, especially when you consider it's coming from the lead producer of a game that for many was the best of 2008.
How does God of War 3 on PS3 make you feel? Let us know in the comments section below!
271w ago - Global services firm Ernst and Young believes the Indian gaming market is turning its back on grey and black market trading, and now has all the elements in place for huge future growth.
The expansion of the Indian economy, increasing disposable incomes and a greater acceptance of gaming as a legitimate form of entertainment are just some of the reasons why the country's video gaming scene is ready to explode, said the international firm.
"Indian consumers are warming up to gaming as an entertainment alternative with proliferation of gaming devices moving northwards," explained Farokh Balsara, industry leader M & E and TCE Advisory leader for Ernst and Young.
"Disposable incomes of the upper middle class are growing with the economy, favourably influencing gaming growth.
The action, though, is still restricted to the top eight cities but with the right investments the potential for box business in India is immense."
As in many burgeoning markets, growth in India has suffered from video game piracy, but the global services firm revealed that the country is moving away from the illegal practice and is shedding the shackles of its reputation for piracy.
Ashok Rajgopal, partner M & E for business advisory services at Ernst and...
286w ago - AOL's GameDaily has conducted a mini-review on Nyko's third party controller for use with the PS3.
It seems to pack pretty good value for money with only some minor negatives which don't get in the way of a worthy purchase. It comes with two battery packs, SIXAXIS motion controls, added comfort, vibration feedback and improved dual action buttons which has them declaring it's the second best choice for playing your PS3 games.
To quote: Does that mean we wouldn't buy it? No. Actually, the negatives are pretty minor compared to what gamers get for their money.
Gamers with larger hands might find the device cramped, but packed with two battery packs, SIXAXIS motion controls, added comfort for long playing marathons, vibration feedback, backlit action buttons and improved dual analog sticks. Nyko's Zero Wireless Controller clearly makes Sony's DualShock 3 the second best choice for playing your PlayStation 3 games.
287w ago - It's been a long time coming, but 06/12 is finally here. For months, I've held a secret, something that may have the shear potential to ultimately unlock the PS3. A few select, knew of my work, and my prospects for this project, and a few select others were told "06/12 is the day."
Explanation: So on this day I give to you a PS3 Tri-Fold Attack Potential release (and Update 1.0 Files, NOT NEEDED- but for those who want to examine the file verification system), all stemming from one game that has a very grave security flaw.
Call of Duty 3: Many games prior to discovering this one, had great potential to write files to the PS3 HDD, such as Resistance: FoM, Motorstorm, and Warhawk. Warhawk was a particularly good one at that cause at the time we managed to overwrite other game param.sfo's.
The major flaw that came about was patches, and game updates that blocked our methods. At the time we had little knowledge of the HDD's true importance to the system's operation, as with prior PS3 Dev news on AIX.
This leads me to the security flaw of CoD3, it can't be patched without an entire Firmware update....
