Today MCV (linked above) has published a number of quotes from UK industry leaders who all reach the same conclusion - the PS2 is standing on its last legs and is effectively dead.
The MD of MasterSonic noted that the PS2 market has been virtually killed overnight, while a major international publisher noted this will be the last Christmas for the PS2 and the company won't support it next year.
To quote: MD of Mastertonic Andy Payne – whose Blast label has enjoyed impressive sales during the PS2’s twilight years – believes the system is on its last legs, thanks to limited space on the High Street.
He told MCV: “The PS2 market has been virtually killed overnight. There’s been no real run-off like with the PSOne, and that’s because retail just does not have the space.”

20th Century Fox said over the weekend that revenues from the new Mark Wahlberg-starring game-movie Max Payne hit $18 million in North America, topping the box office.
Reviews have been roundly terrible, however. Even Scott Miller, CEO of 3D Realms, the producer behind the Max Payne games, found the flick straying significantly from its source material.
"There are several fundamental story flaws ... in the film that have me shaking my head in bewilderment," Miller told Edge.
For instance, he said that one of Max Payne's enemies, the drug distributor Jack Lupino, is "lamely killed by one of the film's non-action characters."
In the first game, Max Payne finishes off Lupino.
Miller elaborated, "...The entire time we're told that this drug makes 1-in-100 people super-human, yet Lupino doesn't demonstrate this in the least. It should have taken a hail storm of bullets to bring him down, plus it should have been Max tha... More »
Anyone who had been hoping that the big screen version of the hit videogame Max Payne would be a hardcore, R-rated release will be very disappointed by the following news.
GameDaily reports that Max Payne, a 20th Century Fox release, has been re-cut to attain a broader audience-friendly PG-13 rating. The John Moore-directed film had initially earned an "R" rating from the Motion Picture Association of America due to its violent content.
What's notable, however, is that this time it was the director and not the studio forcing the issue of getting the more audience-friendly PG-13 rating.
"I didn't have to change much. We trimmed some frames more for the sake of trimming frames than anything, b... More »
Perhaps you've noticed that our October issue of EGM is on its way out the doors of 1UP Manor and into your homes, and perhaps that bit of knowledge has left you wondering what's waiting for you in everyone's favorite section of the magazine: Quartermann!
Well, since we know how much you love getting your monthly taste of gaming gossip, we're giving a sneak peek at some of the hottest rumors in this month's Qmann column.
We've been hearing for months that Max Payne 3 is in the works, but this month we got something a bit juicier to add to this rumor: Original Max Payne developers Remedy Entertainment are currently too busy working on Alan Wake to even consider developing the new Payne sequel. Instead, the next-gen noir shooter will be handled by the same internal Rockstar team that created The Warriors.
And perhaps even more exciting, we've got word that Rockstar is still hard at work on an ... More »

What happens to those games where they show a short video at E3 that gets everyone excited and then nothing is heard from them again?
Like Duke Nukem and Prey, they’ve probably had to start over on a different set of technology as the original technology which at the time was mind-blowing no longer cuts it in today’s age of High Definition, High Dynamic Range Lighting and more ragdoll physics than you can shake a Gravity Gun at!
4. Alan Wake
This little title was first shown off way back in 2005 at E3. Originally planned for PC, Xbox360 and Playstation 3 until Microsoft secured publishing rights to the title and made it a PC/360 exclusive. The title is from the same brains behind the Max Payne series.
You are Alan Wake a writer who is suffering from insomnia after losing his wife, and I don’t mean she died, she vanished. Seriously! He travels to a sleep clinic which is located in Bright Falls, Washington. His insomnia clears. He star... More »
When a new issue of EGM drops, most of the time we tend to scroll right to the rumors and look for the newest bit of gossip. This issue in particular has some very interesting tid-bits.
First, EGM is reporting what we've been speculating for a very long time now: Bioshock is heading to the PlayStation 3 in September, and will come complete with all of the game's downloadable content, as well as improved visuals. This is a topic we've been talking about since before the game launched on the Xbox 360 last year.
We've long believed the game to exist somewhere within Irational Games (now 2K Austin), seeing as how development of Bioshock began for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, as indicated by an early press release for the game. Now we have to wait and hope that EGM, or their sources are right about this.
Another notable rumor is that the Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3 bundle is going to be extremely limited, so if you don't secure yourself a pre-orde... More »
Photographs from the location shoot of the new Max Payne movie have emerged online, revealing Chris O'Donnell in character for the first time.
While Mark Wahlberg is the titular character, Chris O'Donnell plays an executive tied into the big conspiracy that led to the death of Payne's family. He's seen here walking along the snowy streets of New York, either asleep, annoyed or simply caught by the camera at the wrong moment.
Thanks to Film School Rejects for the shots, and there's another shot of Wahlberg as Payne (you can see the first one here).
Max Payne: The Movie is still due sometime this year.

We've been through the production lists of Hollywood again, and uncovered a wealth of console and computer games coming to the big screen....
Yesterday, we dug up 38 old films that are currently in the process of being remade. Today? Here are thirteen computer games coming to the big screen…
EverQuest
The huge online role playing game is currently in the hands of writer Michael ‘300’ Gordon, who is penning a screenplay for a potential 2010 film.
Max Payne
Personally, I love the Max Payne games, and consider it a blight on the face of gamers everywhere that they weren’t more popular. But they’re very movie friendly, and that’s why filming has now commenced on a movie that may yet re-start the gaming franchise, too. Mark Wahlberg is starring, and John Moore (not the one who writes for us, rather the one who remade The Omen) is directing.
