PS3 Debug/TEST Flash Dumped!!

550°
333w ago - Earlier last week, one of the PS3 Devs sent his PS3 Debug/TEST unit off to another resident Dev (who also successfully did a PS3 Retail Flash dump early last year) to have the PS3 Flash dumped.

Well, it has been done! In an amazing feat taking all of 10 minutes, Courier pulled the two PS3 NAND Flash chips from the PS3 TEST and dumped them. Nothing like a hot air rework station in the hands of a professional!

So, the PS3 TEST Flash has been dumped! We also had a chance to do a preliminary analysis on it as we have seen and catalogued nearly 15 seperate PS3 Retail Flash dumps- and there is only (1) constant string in the section we are examining in all of them.

But in the PS3 TEST, it differs!!

More information will be posted soon, but the plan is now to replace said data on a Retail PS3 system, and by doing so modifying its identity to pass the update verification so that Debug/TEST Firmware can be installed on it... along with all the goodies it allows of course.

Future PS3 Firmware to Support Managed Copy

400°
334w ago - We know that a future PlayStation 3 firmware update will enable Portable Copy, a feature that will allow users to copy a downsampled version of certain Blu-ray titles over to their PSP for portable viewing.

But in a recent interview with Japanese site Impress Watch, Sony engineers revealed that an upcoming firmware update will also bring support for Managed Copy.

With Managed Copy, PS3 owners will be able to pop-in a Blu-ray disc and legally rip it straight to their PS3's hard drive. Additionally, future updates are expected to bring 1080 deinterlacing and DTS-HD MA support to the console. A release window for the new features was not given.

On the subject of Firmware 2.20, one of the engineers said that the forthcoming update will greatly reduce system memory usage.

Without a doubt, this is great news for developers and likely means that Sony is paving the way for in-game XMB.

PS3 Firmware 2.30 in April; required for new PlayStation Store

50°
335w ago - Update: Sony has officially confirmed that the new PlayStation Store interface will also be coming to North America in mid-April.

To quote: Customers will be able to access, browse, shop and download content as usual prior to the store's re-opening. However, no additional downloadable content will be posted prior to then, including this Thursday, April 3rd, and next Thursday, April 10th.

Regularly scheduled content updates will resume with the Store's re-opening, at which time additional games and game-related items will be added, including the downloadable version of the highly-anticipated exclusive PS3 title Gran Turismo 5 Prologue.

Sony has released 3 sample images of the new design for the PlayStation store and said that "Content will be suspended for two weeks while the improvements are carried out but users can look forward to a special update in mid-April."

Sony has also reportedly told the media that the PlayStation Store face lift on PS3 will no longer use the PS3 Web browser, and will require new firmware upgrade version 2.30. The facelift is said to be much faster and cache all images correctly.

Sony has yet to confirm the facelift release...

336w ago - Per Al De Leon (PR Manager, SCEA) today:

Hi, everyone. When you turn on your PS3 today, you'll be greeted with the newest system software update, v2.20. We gave you the heads up last week on what the new firmware would deliver, and, as promised, we have Eric Lempel back on camera to walk through a demo of some the new features.

Also, to set the record straight, Blu-ray Portable Copy was never a part of this firmware update, and the feature isn't related to BD-LIVE. We know a lot of you are excited about the ability to take a copy of a BD movie with you on the go on your PSP, so we'll keep you posted on any developments with this cool feature in the future.
