PS3 Firmware 2.16 (EUR) Update Available for Collectors!

50°
317w ago - Periodically Sony includes interim retail PS3 Firmware updates on PS3 game discs and console region revisions.

Examples include PS3 Firmware 1.02 (on launch title Game Discs including Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom), 1.11 (on early JAP PS3 consoles), and 1.55 (on early 60GB PS3 consoles). These never make it to actual PS3 Firmware updates via PSN, as they generally only contain a minor change/bugfix.

Today we have another one of these cases- PS3 Firmware 2.16 Update was extracted from a Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (EUR) Game Disc and uploaded to the Internet. No, it doesn't contain any 'supersecret holes' (lol) and it unpacks just like all the rest do with PS3 Update Unpacker v1 but for the collectors out there it's available below- enjoy!

WIP: Downgrade your PS3 version without previous dumps!

100°
318w ago - We announced this notice some time ago, now I would like to show you a picture of the tool I compiled to do the job. You need the Infectus mod-chip on your PS3 to downgrade. This mod-chip allows you to take a backup of your current PS3 Firmware that can be restored.

The news is that before it wasn't possible to downgrade without a previous dump of your own PS3 console's Firmware, but now things have changed.

Using this tool you can modify a NAND backup in order to let the console think it has a lower Firmware version, so later you can use an official Sony upgrade PUP file to "downgrade" to the version you need.

It has been tested to patch all PS3 Firmware dumps up to 2.10 so far, but is a work-in-progress as we still need to test re-updating more thoroughly.

I would like to thanks to Gigi and Mainman for their support in this tool, and all the other PS3News Devs for helping us in all our work.

318w ago - Update: Per Jeff Rubenstein (Social Media Manager, PlayStation Blog): In case you were wondering what it's all about, the operating stability of some online PS3 titles has been improved. Hope that clears things up!

It's now official- Sony has indeed skipped a retail release of PS3 Firmware 2.15 (Debug) in lieu of PS3 Firmware Update 2.17 which is out now via Network Update or below!

Download: PS3 FW Update 2.17 (US) / PS3 FW Update 2.17 (EU)

There isn't an official changelog available yet, but it appears to be primarily a bugfix update at this time.

Also, for what it's worth a little birdie told us Sony Devs already have 2.20 so perhaps another quick update will follow soon? :P
