Rumor: New slimmer 160GB PlayStation 3 this autumn?

100°
348w ago - A tech site is claiming that a well-informed insider has told them that Sony is planing a sexier slimmer, lighter weight PlayStation for this Autumn.

They say that its likely that the rumored 160GB SKU will infact be this new version. Details have recently emerged of a new 45nm Cell Broadband engine and a smaller Blu-ray laser diode, but surely we can't expect a slimmer PS3 by Autumn?

To quote: Sony has peddled out their usual line of 'not commenting on rumors and speculation', but that is exactly what they said before they dropped the size zero edition of the PSP.

For now, that's all we have. But rest assured we'll be pounding the phones and keeping our ears pricked for any news as soon as we get it.

PlayStation Home feedback has led to look-and-feel changes

50°
348w ago - Feedback from users who were testing the PlayStation Home beta has led to key changes.

Changes include: it nows starts off in an outside space(rather then a closed room) with fully functional chess and draughts game tables, some entrance points to key content areas have been made more recognizable, the screening areas of the theater have all been moved downstairs because users said the 12 second walk to the top was too long.

Home is currently on track for a spring 2008 launch.

To quote: What had been an enclosed room with a large window showing a lush view has now been transformed into a serene outside space, with plenty of room for people to interact, and tables with fully functional chess and draughts games included.

Venables and Festejo also revealed that it was now possible to take your avatar out onto a balcony from your own apartment, and that there would be "around eight or nine" different apartments available at launch, although no new details on potential pricing options for the premium apartments were available.

One of the premium rooms displayed was called Norwegian Lodge, a large wood cabin, much bigger than the basic apartment, and while all of the existing apartment designs were based on real-world locations, Festejo commented that he could see more...

PSN sales go from zero to hero - Sony "surprised"

50°
348w ago - A recent charge in users of the online PlayStation Network has surprised even Sony, SCEE president and CEO David Reeves says.

It seems the PSN has reaped the benefits of the recent turn of fortunes for the PS3, as Reeves stated: "One thing that has surprised us is in the Network purchases and the general level of interest that has been shown around the Network business."

He continues: "We've gone from zero to almost double-digit millions in terms of what people have purchased in euros.

"We've now got about two million PSN registrations. That's about 40 per cent of users. We've also had around 33 million downloads, which is a huge number. And we've got 25 stores up and running across the PAL territories," he told MCV.

Things should pick up even further when Sony unleashes its PSN virtual world, Home, later this year.
