Sony Shows Off GT 5 Prologue at SEMA

50°
351w ago - Gran Turismo 5 Prologue was prominently featured at the recent Gran Turismo Awards. The 2007 SEMA show is the perfect collaboration between the auto and gaming industries.

LAS VEGAS--Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) hosted its fifth annual Gran Turismo Awards last night at Wynn Casino's Tryst nightclub in conjunction with the 2007 SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) show.

"The 2007 Gran Turismo Awards showcases the collaboration between the automotive culture and the gaming industry," said Kazunori Yamauchi, the creator of the racing franchise that has sold over 47 million copies worldwide. "We are proud to honor auto enthusiasts for their passion of cars, and to celebrate the automotive lifestyle that Gran Turismo embodies."

The president of developer Polyphony Digital was in Vegas to demo the new game, which is slated to ship in Q1 2008 (potentially in February), as well as to hand-pick the winner of this year's "Best of Show" award--Marcel Horn. A virtual version of Horn's 2007 Audi TT vehicle will be featured in the next game, Gran Turismo 5, which is at least another year away from release.

Last year's "Best of Show" car, a silver 1960 Chevrolet Corvette, is playable in Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, which was on display at Sony Electronic's booth at SEMA.

Sony PS3 in dramatic sales turn around

100°
351w ago - The Sony PS3 could be about to pull off one of the biggest turn-arounds the games market has ever seen. After a slow start, where Sony's console was hampered by its high pricing and lack of quality games, the PlayStation 3 now looks like it's on a roll.

Now that the PS3 and Xbox 360 price-changes and various new models have settled into the market place, sales figures for both consoles are looking dramatically different.

PS3 on the charge
Through August and September, the Xbox 360 was consistently outselling the PlayStation 3 by quite a margin. In late September, the combined might of the new Xbox 360 Elite and Halo 3 gave Microsoft a 30,000 unit lead over Sony (according to VG Chartz data).

But the "Halo" momentum has definitely slowed for Microsoft and the fortunes of the two consoles have seemingly reversed.

While the Nintendo Wii is still way out in front in Europe (VG Chartz estimates that it sold 50,000 plus in the past two weeks), the PS3 is now consistently outselling the Xbox 360 in the UK for the first time.

In the few weeks after the PS3's price-cut, Sony's console sales effectively doubled, rising from a steady 5,000 per week in September to 12,000 plus at the end of October .

In the week ending 28 October, VG Chartz has the PS3 outselling...

Pump up your Playstation 3 Hard Drive to 320GB!

400°
351w ago - In case you haven't already ordered this piece of hardware, we bring good news: Western Digital have just launched a 320GB 2.5 inch Scorpio SATA hard drive. This 5400 RPM baby costs only $200 and it will be compatible with the PS3 that supports any SATA hard drive out there. Finally some freedom from Sony who will probably be the last company to ignore homebrewers instead of working with them.

I guess that buying a cheaper PS3 and than this hard drive is a better option than going for a more expensive console. Also, putting Linux on such a hard drive is also a good idea and an option used by many PS3 owners, who have that 10GB storage space required by the OS. So, what could you fit in 320GB? Well, probably enough Metal Gear Solid 4 and Final Fantasy XIII saves to last for a lifetime. Since Sony's new format, the Blu-ray brought some extra storage space to the new age disk, hard drives are forced to evolve as we're heading towards a "downloadable future", which will see the DVD, Blu-Ray and HD-DVD only being used for music and films, while the games are made available through online services.

Till that time comes, we're "training" with hard drives and Western Digital's latest work is not impressive considering that a PS3 games can take up about 30GB of storage space in case Sony decides to make it available...

The Most Delayed Games Ever

50°
351w ago - How long does it take to make a game? How long's a piece of string? There's obviously no simple answer because every new hardware generation brings greater expectations and puts more demands on developers. However, most would agree that a decade to make a game is a bit excessive.

So here's a celebration - or should we call it a mockery? - of games that went a little over their original release dates, not to mention budgets. Were they worth the wait? Let us know in the comments field at the bottom of the page.

Prey (3D Realms, 1995 - 2006)

To be fair to 3D Realms it was grand ambition rather than bad management that was to be Prey's undoing. The game was first announced back in 1995 with Tom Hall (of id software and Ion Storm fame) heading the project. However, after a year Hall left the company and the project was passed over to Paul Schuytema. While Schuytema kept the alien abduction theme he introduced a wildly ambitious (at least for its time) portal dynamic that allowed players to teleport around levels. These 'space rip' features were demoed to great accalim at E3 in both 1997 and 1998 but technical problems with the engine saw the game stutter to an embarrassing halt.

After much tweaking and re-writing the game was eventually resurrected in 2001 when more potent technology...
