Video: A Peek At PS3 TEST Firmware 2.40!

50°
324w ago - The retail counterpart is rumored to be released during mid to late June, however, recently we had a chance to check out PS3 Debug/TEST Firmware v2.40 (116 MB - 122,268,311 bytes).

Below is a video of it in action, displaying some of the new features. As expected, we can confirm from 2.40 onwards, the system software can be called any time during the gameplay. It appears the in-game XMB does not work while playing PS2 titles, probably the same with PS1 titles as well although we didn't have a PS1 game handy to try.

The video is slightly better quality than the previous PS3 TEST SD Launcher 1.00 Video as video capture was used this time instead of our old camera... as there is no need to view the TEST PS3 in the video this round.

Anyway, more soon... enjoy the video!

Rumor: 40GB PS3 Backwards Compatibility via Firmware Update?

50°
325w ago - According to the German site linked above, a contact has revealed that the 40GB PS3 will soon be able to achieve backwards compatibility (in October).

It will do so through the use of 100% software emulation which will come by way of a new Firmware update. However, for the time being we'll label this as only a rumor.

To quote: In a discussion between us and Sony an import merchant from the USA, which import to Germany, we experienced that the 40GB is to become downward compatible variant of the PS3 in October PS2 plays. The whole is to go via firmware an update of.

Thus our contact man added joking that he had get rid now immediately all 60GB of models, which he has still on supply, since they would suffer a noticeable depreciation after publication of the firmware. This sounds quite plausible, since many seize to around some more expensive 60GB model only due to the downward compatibility, which with same functionality of the 40GB of model then would become void.

On the question, how this from technical side will look, us it was insured that this was to take place "to 100% by means of software emulation". According to the dealer is planned the firmware for October, to one hundred per cent it cannot assure this however.

We can likewise no warranty for the correctness...

3D Blu-ray on PS3 via Firmware Update in 2008?

50°
325w ago - 3D Blu-Ray, even on PS3 via single Firmware Update ? An interesting technology, that prompted Play3-Live to interview Manuel R. Gutierrez Novelo, CEO & President of TDVision Systems. To quote:

"We're in the process to enable the PlayStation 3 to playback 3D movies using our TDVCodec and Blu-ray discs at our R&D labs since the PS3 is enabled with the BD2.0 version. Currently we have it working on a PC in 3D and after some changes on the firmware and installing some software for the PS3 we'll be playing 3D directly form the PS3.

Movies can be either computer generated in stereoscopic 3D (Polar Express) or the U2 Concert. Those were not originally created or recorded with our technology but we just need to re-encode them. After we re-encode them with our TDVCodec in step 2 then they are ready to be seen in 3D at home where available, or in 2D where not.

The objective (and what we are talking to major studios) is to encode their existing and new 3D stereoscopic content with our TDVCodec and have the movies available in every-shop everywhere in the world since one single Blu-ray disc encoded with our format has the 2D and the 3D version and can be played back in 2D over existing 2D platforms and in 3D where the platform is available as shown in steps 4 and 5 (PC or PS3 with our firmware update...

Rumor: PS3 Firmware 2.40 Update confirmed for June 18th?

350°
325w ago - Dutch Web site PlayStation Only has been told that Firmware 2.40 is 100% confirmed for a release on June 18th.

The previous reported date of June 10th is incorrect, our source told us. Only In-game XMB has been confirmed so far.

However, it's likely that there will also be Trophy support in it.

Needless to say, this is dubbed a rumor until the day (and the PS3 Firmware Update) arrives.

Rumor: PS3 Firmware 2.40 Features In-Game XMB

200°
326w ago - According to Jim Cordeira over at Gaming-Age, the long-awaited Firmware 2.4 update for PlayStation 3 will hit later this summer, complete with a universal friends list and In-Game XMB functionality.

While Sony has yet to comment, it's no secret that a major firmware release is due out soon. Back in March, SCEE UK head Ray Maguire made mention of 2.4, but did not provide specifics - aside from confirming that the update would hit in the summer and include "In-Game communication."

An EA employee who goes by the alias of "evilone" on NeoGAF gave credence to Jim's report, noting that "there is more then just In-Game XMB coming in 2.40."

Until it's release, we're still filing this as a rumor, but there is a good chance it's legit... time will tell for sure.
