Devs Problems: Lack of memory on Sony PS3 and storage on Xbox 360

50°
351w ago - We have heard many gamers comparing the different games on the Sony PS3 and Xbox 360 but today we had a long comment from someone calling themselves "IsThis4Real" and they make an interesting case for both the PS3 and 360.

Also they outline some of the problems both games consoles face and explain a little about the CELL CPU. Have a read a let us know if you agree.

Here is IsThis4Real's comment: I honestly wish people would get over the whole "CELL" thing. Its totally, as it stands now, overated - and the concept is still in its infancy. Its not the be all end all of CPUs. Its simply a single IBM Power PC core with 7 SPEs. I think people still make the mistake in claiming and thinking that they are essentially seperate CPUs. They are not.

Its "simply" designed for very fast on the fly encoding/decoding (gross missunderstatement, I know - but I think for some it has to be put VERY simply if you know what I mean) - its specialty will lie in the integration of the home based setup.

This is something Sony mooted nearly 10 or more so years ago, the ability to have every single (Sony based) product in one house hold to be able to communicate with eachother. This is when they forst started announcing that they were working on a single SUPER cpu.Watch that space over the next...

PS3 Gets 'Largest Ever' Campaign; 80GB Sees 'Phenomenal' Sales

50°
351w ago - Sony Computer Entertainment America VP of Marketing Peter Dille has proudly unveiled two new TV spots for the PS3 and noted that the 80GB model has seen great sales growth at $499.

In conjunction with the launch of the new 40GB PS3 for $399 (which kicks off today), Dille said that the new campaign starts this weekend - hopefully spurring sales of the cheaper PS3. While the 'White Room' ads focused on the console's power, this campaign, which Dille says is "our largest ever behind a hardware platform," will focus on all the games coming out and the functionality of the machine.

"... we wanted to move beyond the 'power' message with a more high-energy, entertainment driven focus for the PS3. The games are here, the price point is now $399 and we wanted to make the news loud and clear. But we need to deliver that in a way that befits the PlayStation brand," Dille said. "And so, beyond the brilliant HD games that the PS3 delivers, you'll also see a big focus behind the PS3's Blu-ray movie capability and, for the first time, you'll see a major focus behind the PlayStation Network (did I mention online gaming is free on PS3??) and the exclusive gaming content available on the PlayStation Store, as well as breakthrough services like Home."

Dille also noted that the 80GB PS3, which is backwards compatible...

Gamers don't watch HD movies

50°
351w ago - PS3, Xbox 360 owners would rather play games instead. If you believe the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA), millions of PlayStation 3 gamers all over the globe are watching movies on their consoles. That's just not true, says HD DVD man Olivier Van Wynendaele, and it doesn't really work for HD DVD movies on the Xbox 360 either.

Van Wynendaele - who's the spokesman for the HD DVD Promotion Group - made the claims during an exclusive interview with Tech.co.uk conducted yesterday. He also said that the majority of PS3 owners didn't know their consoles could play movies, period:

"[According to] the independent figures we have from independent research companies and so on, it appears that 60 per cent of games consoles owners don't know they can play movies - either DVD or Blu-ray - in the PS3. That means at least 60 per cent are not active.

"Even among the remaining 40 per cent... 13 per cent are actually using their games console as a player, and the rest are not. People are buying their consoles to play games, not to watch movies."

The HD DVD experience
For further evidence, Van Wynendaele turned to Microsoft's record with the HD DVD add-on for the Xbox 360:

"The attach rate is less than two digits. So [Microsoft has] sold a lot, but it's an expensive accessory for...

351w ago - Gran Turismo 5 Prologue was prominently featured at the recent Gran Turismo Awards. The 2007 SEMA show is the perfect collaboration between the auto and gaming industries.

LAS VEGAS--Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) hosted its fifth annual Gran Turismo Awards last night at Wynn Casino's Tryst nightclub in conjunction with the 2007 SEMA (Specialty Equipment Market Association) show.

"The 2007 Gran Turismo Awards showcases the collaboration between the automotive culture and the gaming industry," said Kazunori Yamauchi, the creator of the racing franchise that has sold over 47 million copies worldwide. "We are proud to honor auto enthusiasts for their passion of cars, and to celebrate the automotive lifestyle that Gran Turismo embodies."

The president of developer Polyphony Digital was in Vegas to demo the new game, which is slated to ship in Q1 2008 (potentially in February), as well as to hand-pick the winner of this year's "Best of Show" award--Marcel Horn. A virtual version of Horn's 2007 Audi TT vehicle will be featured in the next game, Gran Turismo 5, which is at least another year away from release.

Last year's "Best of Show" car, a silver 1960 Chevrolet Corvette, is playable in Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, which was on display at Sony Electronic's booth at SEMA.
