Bloober Games: Behind Basement Crawl for PS4 / PlayStation 4

59w ago - Bloober Games Creative Director and Vice-President Peter Bielatowicz goes behind Basement Crawl for PS4 / PlayStation 4 today with details below, as follows:

Hello fellow gamers! I wanted to give you some information about a game we are currently developing for the PS4 launch window - Basement Crawl.

Gameplay-wise, Basement Crawl is a maze-based action game with some strategic elements. Our main inspirations were old classics like Spy vs. Spy and Bomberman, and gameplay revolves around setting up traps (self-detonated or activated by characters approaching it or stepping on it without noticing) to hurt other players.

It's focused on multiplayer, but basic single player campaigns with bots to fill in for missing characters will be available too.

While our inspirations go back to the retro classics, we are making a game up-to-date with the competition. It goes from the audio-visuals - Basement Crawl will be 2.5D game with dynamic cameras - to the game modes, characters and mechanics.

We felt that many games nowadays are dependent on character development or luck and randomness, so we designed Basement Crawl to exclude the luck factor and remove the dependence on leveling-up characters.

We want to make Basement Crawl as skill-based as possible...

Sony Employees Respond to PlayStation 4 DRM & PS4 Used Games

68w ago - Following up on their previous confirmation that the PlayStation 4 / PS4 console won't block used games, some top Sony employees have also responded to the [Register or Login to view links] movement (hashtags #PS4NoDRM and #PS4USEDGAMES) to accept used video games and remove DRM (digital rights management) protection from them.

The movement started (via neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=568033) with the intended goal being to convince Sony not to take the same route as Microsoft with the PS4. They also want people to tell Sony that the PlayStation 4 should be region free and have free online play.

Below are some excerpts from some high-ranking Sony staffers revealing that the company is listening to consumers and gamers alike, as follows:

John Koller, the head of Sony Hardware Marketing commented (twitter.com/jpkoller): This is why I love PlayStation fans- the passion bucket overflows #playstation

While Nick Accordino, an SCEA producer, added (twitter.com/Nikoro): Humbled by the outpouring of passionate PlayStation fans and their willingness to talk to us directly. Please know that we hear you. <3

Sony Confirms PlayStation 4 / PS4 Won't Block Second-hand Used Games

82w ago - Following up on yesterday's PlayStation 4 / PS4 announcement and PlayStation 4 / PS4 trailer videos, today Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida confirmed that PlayStation 4 / PS4 won't block the use of second-hand (used) games.

To quote from Eurogamer (linked above): "Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has told Eurogamer that PlayStation 4 will not block the use of second-hand games, contrary to various reports, speculation and even a Sony patent unearthed last month.

I sat down with Yoshida a few hours after the PS4 reveal tonight and one of the first things I asked was whether used games would be blocked.

"Do you want us to do that?" he asked.

No, I said. I think, if you buy something on a disc, that you have a kind of moral contract with the person you've bought it from that you retain some of that value and you can pass it on.

Do you agree, I asked?

"Yes. That's the general expectation by consumers," said Yoshida. "They purchase physical form, they want to use it everywhere, right? So that's...

Confirmed: Ubisoft Working on PS4, XBox 720 Video Games

277w ago - As part of Ubisoft's financial report released yesterday, company founder Yves Guillemot stated "10 percent of Ubisoft's workforce is working on developing games for the next generation of game systems that will eventually replace [the] Wii, [the] Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3."

Yes, he actually said that.

To quote: "What has helped us is we always take the new technologies right at the beginning of their availability, and we go after them faster than everyone else," he continued.

The company was one of the first to make titles exclusively for the Wii, and appear to wish to continue this with launch titles for the PS4 and whatever the next Xbox will be called.
