Guide: How To Make Your Own PS3 Themes

50°
328w ago - Courtesy of the PlayStation Blog today: Hi, folks!

My name's Noel Silvia, and I'm a Graphic Artist and part of the PlayStation Network team.

I'm here today to walk you through how to make and install your own Themes for your PLAYSTATION 3. All you'll need are:

- an image editing program (MSPaint, Adobe PhotoShop, etc.)
- the provided "compiler" program
- a little time

Start by downloading the "HowToMakePS3Themes.zip".zip file HERE and extracting it onto your computer.

In this zip are folders with the necessary files for each step of the process.

Step 1: Create

Let's start at the very beginning.

- In this folder, you'll find the images that make the XMB, its sub-icons, and the background wallpapers for HD and SD resolutions.
- There is also a file called "PS3Theme_template.xml", but we'll come back to that a little later.
- It's important that you don't change any of the file names in this folder. If you do, it will cause problems later on.
- Start by deciding...

Rumor: PSN to charge for PS3 Themes?

200°
331w ago - To quote from Sam Fletcher: Browsing my Hong Kong PSN account today, I noticed that the Dark Mist theme cost money to download. $7.00 HKD, translates to $0.89 USD (or £0.45) but thats still a lot more than downloading the themes for free.

X-Box 360 users already pay a dollar or two for themes, and maybe now Sony are following suit.

Whether this will become a trend followed by the other stores is yet to be seen, but maybe all official themes from now on will come with a price.

Oh well, I'll stick to the classic XMB wave, or failing that, a user made theme. :P

Those seeking PS3 Themes there no longer have to register/login to download them- we have opened the downloads in that section only to ALL visitors now. Keep in mind you must be logged in to rate and comment on the Themes there still.

Finally, as mentioned HERE we are currently asking anyone who has grabbed the Official Sony Ratchet & Clank: ToD Theme -OR- the Uncharted Theme from yesterday's PSN update to kindly upload them. Thanks guys!

Creating your own PS3 Themes!

50°
358w ago - Good news for designers, you can create your own XMB theme. SCEJ released a program to do that.

Step 1: You will need to download the official PS3 Theme Tool from Sony's Japanese Web site.

Step 2: Extract the file to a folder on your computer.

Step 3: Open command prompt and navigate to the folder.

Step 4: The folder should contain a sample folder, a GrimConv folder, a p3tcompiler.exe and other assorted files. To create your theme you will need to run the p3tcompiler.exe passing in the sample.xml.

Example: If you are in the p3tcompiler_v101 folder, you run: p3tcompiler .sample1sample.xml

Step 5: This creates a number of .gim files and a sample.p3t files in the sample /01/ directory. Take the sample.p3t file and transfer it to a memory stick in the following location: PS3->THEME

Step 6: Plug the memory stick into your PS3 and select the theme setting, where you will be given an option to install; do so, and you will have your sample theme.

Step 7: To construct your own custom theme, it's a case of editing all of the .png files in the sample directory, and re-run all of the above.
