Valve Explains Why They Avoid the 'Too Technical' PS3 Console

550°
267w ago - How come we've yet to see Valve develop something for the PS3? Being one of the better game developers out there, you'd think they'd be one of the first to get in line tweaking with the PS3's hardware.

Apparently, that's not the case as they seem to find it too complicated.

Tom Leonard, Valve Game Designer, had this to say when asked about this very issue over at E3:

"The PC and the 360 are just more straightforward. We can focus on what we want to do, which is make game experiences, instead of sweating bullets over obscure architectural decisions they make with their platform... I didn't come into this business in the 90s because of some technical fetish.

I came in because I wanted to give people experiences that made them have fun."

SCEE President: Wii Owners Will Upgrade to a PS3 Console

500°
267w ago - A few months ago SCEE confirmed news that Andrew House would be replacing David Reeves as president.

That being said, it appears the new president of SCEE isn't wasting any time taking over the reins from David Reeves and causing a stir.

After having been in his new office for only a little over a month, House is already making daring statements, telling Edge-Online in an [Register or Login to view links] that he believes Wii owners will eventually 'upgrade' to PS3, and that the PS3's lifecycle could "significantly" exceed ten years.

To quote: "If you look back at previous lifecycles, like PS2 versus N64 [sic], we have lots of data that suggests that lots of people bought into N64 as their entry level gaming device, and were happy to upgrade to a more powerful machine later in the lifecycle when the price point was right for them."

"I think we're going to see this later on PS3, and the fact that it's a Blu-ray player as well and that there's a [greater] wealth of network based experiences than are perhaps available on the device they already have will add to the proposition. I think that will...

Square Enix's PS3 Console Exclusive MMO Codenamed 'Rapture'

400°
269w ago - Gameplayer has received word on what one of the new games to be announced by Square Enix at E3 2009 and it is an MMO that's a console exclusive for the PS3.

To quote: At the time of writing we had been requested to not divulge the names or giveaway said titles, but we've just received new information about one of those three games that comes with no such restrictions. So here we go...

Contrary to what we were originally told, there will be a Square Enix press conference after all, at 11a.m on the Wednesday of the show. This will be a portal for selected media to learn more about one of Square Enix's currently unannounced games, which we can reveal is an MMO codenamed Rapture, and set for release on PS3 and PC. The game is expected to be unveiled at the Sony press conference on the Tuesday.

While the PC and Xbox 360 have shared a strong software relationship over the last three years, the PC and PS3 have a more open rapport when it comes to online interactivity between the software and the gamers.

It seems bizarre given Microsoft's networking know-how, but the heavy restrictions it puts in place with the way developers can manipulate and engage their audience through Xbox Live makes it difficult for some games to make the most of their potential. Also worthy of note is the...

Sony: No Plans for a PS3 Slim Console Version Anytime Soon

200°
271w ago - Sony have point-blank denied online speculation that a slimline version of the PS3 could be on the way.

Rumors have been circling since yesterday that the platform holder might reveal a newly streamlined model at E3, in a similar vein to the popular PSone and 'PStwo' systems.

To quote: Speaking to UK website [Register or Login to view links], however, a spokesperson for the firm said that the company "doesn't have any plans" for a revision of the hardware at present.

While Sony have moved quickly to deny any PS3 hardware changes, the firm have been less quick to snuff out speculation pointing toward a new-look PSP handheld. More at E3 2009, perhaps?

When paired with a 3D-capable...
