270w ago - August first is just around the corner, and that day is when the Black Nintendo Wii launches in Japan.

Admit it, it looks sweet (pictured below). That blue light on the face of the console amidst the solid black makes it look ultra modern.

Even the packaging looks classy.

The Black version of the Wii lands in Japan on August 1st for 25,000 (US$ 258).

Thanks to Hero of Legend of NeoGAF (linked above) for the news.

WiiElfFix v1.0: Load Nintendo SDK ELFs via the HBC on Wii

50°
271w ago - Today xorloser has released WiiElfFix v1.0, which is a small tool that will patch a Nintendo SDK compiled ELF file to boot via the Wii Homebrew Channel.

Download: [Register or Login to view links]

To quote: The Homebrew Channel (HBC) was designed to be used with the Homebrew SDK aka [Register or Login to view links]. So any files you compile with devkitPro should load OK via the HBC.

If you try to load a file that was compiled with the Nintendo SDK however you will get an error that "This is not a valid Wii application". This is because the Homebrew Channel retrieves the load addresses for each ELF program segment from the Physical Address field, and in Nintendo SDK files this field is set to zero.

Hopefully the HBC guys will fix this in the next release, making the HBC more compatible. In the meantime you can use this little tool I made to patch your ELF file. It copies the values from the Virtual Address field into the Physical Address field for each program segment in your ELF file.

Nintendo Wii System Menu 4.1 is Released in Japan

50°
272w ago - Nintendo released a Wii Firmware update, version 4.1 today in Japan.

A bug fix to Wii Sports Resort, in which after playing a WiiWare/VC game off the SD card, and then playing Wii Sports Resort afterward, you would be forced to watch the how-to Wii Motion Plus video that normally plays only once on the initial play of Wii Sports Resort.

The usual warnings apply, updating is not recommended until more information is known about its effects on homebrew.

Bannerbomb is still working! You may check updates via Wiimposter Logs.

Version 4.1 of the System Menu was built on June 24th, 2009 and released on July 3rd, 2009.

Video: Nintendo Wii Homebrew Browser One Year Anniversary

50°
273w ago - News from CodeMii regarding the HomebrewBrowser, I have to say it's simply amazing how much this gets used, more people use this as their way of downloading new apps than by hand, incredible.

To quote: The Homebrew Browser turns 1 today. I have to say that it doesn't feel like it's been a year for me but you can't argue with the release dates.

Along with it comes this quick 1 year anniversary video put together showing the progression of the HBB versions.

The ending seems familiar

Nintendo: No Reason to Make Wii HD-Compatible at This Time

500°
274w ago - Nintendo is still insisting that as far as the original Wii is concerned, there is not a significant reason to make it HD compatible.

However, a new Wii may well support HD because HD is common across the world.

To quote: Nintendo president Satoru Iwata recently talked to VentureBeat about the HD upgrade of the Wii and revealed that:

"If we have an opportunity to make a new console, it will probably support HD because it is now common throughout the world. However, as far as the Wii is concerned, we have not found a significant reason to make it HD-compatible at this time."

The executive went on to say that: "What is the significant meaning to the users? I don't think we should do it unless we find that reason. If we decide for other reasons to make new hardware, then HD is one of the things we would naturally add. As for timing, it may be three years from now, five years from now or eight years from now."
