500°
350w ago - Yesterday we posted a rumor of a PS3 Hello World Homebrew Method found by dragula96. Many were skeptical as it was announced the day before April Fool's Day, however, today we are happy to confirm the only fools were those who dubbed it as "fake" :P

Courtesy of dragula96, here is the PS3 Hello World UT3 Mod Proof-Of-Concept along with related info and a new video detailing how it was done! Please NOTE (as suspected in the previous comments) this is a UT3 Mod and not true PS3 homebrew (running unsigned code), however, it is an excellent accomplishment in itself.

From the ReadMe file: ps3 hello world by dragula96 4.1.08

Rumor: PS3 Hello World Homebrew Method Found?!

200°
350w ago - Dragula96 has posted a video (below) on YouTube today that demonstrates a PS3 "Hello World" Proof-Of-Concept.

Needless to say, today is the day before April 1st (April Fool's Day), however, dragula96 has been a long-standing contributer of several development boards (including PS2Dev) for several years... so we have opted give him the benefit of the doubt for the time being and dubbed this a "rumor"

He also states he is attempting to get a game of Pong working, and that he will share the method and source code in time.

According to dragula96, this does not require any hardware modification and the method has been tested on a PS3 40GB and 60GB console- both of which have current 2.20 Firmware and are retail models, not development models!

To quote: In the video, you can see some tape on my TV, that is to hide MAC and IP addresses... there are no cuts in video at all.

I have spent somewhere around 9 hours to get this working, and I hope you guys don't think this is a fake.. I have a good reputation in the PSP scene. I would not release something if it was fake (even if it is close to April Fool's Day).

I do not know the extent of which the discovery will let me program, but I seriously...

PS3 network enters record book

372w ago - A project that harnesses the spare processing power of Sony's PlayStation 3 (PS3) to help understand the cause of diseases has entered the record books.

Guinness World Records has recognised folding@home (FAH) as the world's most powerful distributed computing network.

FAH has signed up nearly 700,000 PS3s to examine how the shape of proteins affect diseases such as Alzheimer's.

The network has more than one petaflop of computing power - the equivalent of 1,000 trillion calculations per second.

"To have folding@home recognized by Guinness World Records as the most powerful distributed computing network ever is a reflection of the extraordinary worldwide participation by gamers and consumers around the world and for that we are very grateful," said Professor Vijay Pande of Stanford University and a leader of the FAH project.

Zucker: PS3 Tech Issues Over, 'Ambitious Open-World Game' Coming Soon

50°
372w ago - Midway CEO David F. Zucker said the company has learned from the development process of Stranglehold and Unreal Tournament 3, and that the company's multiplatform releases would be more promptly synchronized going forward.

He explained, regarding the issues with Midway titles being delayed on PS3: "For our first wave of next-gen games... lead development has been on the Xbox 360, due to its earlier introduction and larger installed base. We ran into some technical issues developing for the PlayStation 3 that have taken more time to finalize than we expected."

Zucker continued: "These include... making sure that the framerate, networking, and graphical features are at parity between the platforms. We've also encountered challenges as a result of shipping two of the very first PS3 games using Epic's Unreal Engine 3."

These titles are the now-shipped Stranglehold and the soon-to-ship Blacksite: Area 51. The Midway CEO concluded of the issues: "We do believe that these technical issues are now complete at a core level in our engine. Looking ahead to 2008, we expect the PS3 versions of our titles to ship day and date..." with the Xbox 360 and other SKUs.

Additionally, Zucker said that the company's production plan regarding Sony exclusives and Epic's Midway-published Unreal...
