Sony Details the 19 Classes of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn

100°
25w ago - Square Enix Community Project Manager Hergen Thaens detailed the 19 classes of Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn for PS4 fans today.

To quote: Welcome to another update on Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn - the biggest one so far. A lot of you have probably played the first beta phase from February 22nd to March 3rd - barely enough time to get your hands on one or two classes in a single city, right? Well then, let's introduce you to the others!

You're free to start in any of the three cities: Gridania, Ul'dah, or Limsa Lominsa. Most of you will want to get used to the game first, so you can play solo and get acquainted with everything.

Up until level 15, you've got tons of local quests and adventures that await you - and from level 15 onwards, the whole world opens up to you as you get access to the airship and the other cities.

If you want to play with your friends, you simply have to choose classes with the same starting cities, and you can group up right away.

Once you've acquired a class, you can change to it at any given time (outside of combat and dungeons) by simply equipping the weapon associated with it. It's that simple!

So, let's get started, shall we?

Gridania, One with the Forest

Gridania lies in the...

17-Bit Announces Galak-Z is Coming to PlayStation Vita, Details

50°
25w ago - 17-Bit Senior Producer Raj Joshi announced today that Galak-Z is coming to PlayStation Vita with details below.

To quote: We here at 17-BIT are ecstatic to announce we'll be bringing the same seat-of-your-pants space shooting gameplay of Galak-Z to PS Vita. Since each game of Galak-Z is a unique, randomly-generated adventure, you'll be able to dive deep into a fresh experience anytime you have a free moment, no matter where you are.

Counting From One to Infinity

As we designed Galak-Z, we realized a funny thing - we kept building onto one main level rather than adding new levels.

Typically, we'd be building new levels left and right to express new gameplay concepts, but with Galak-Z, we were focused on how each new enemy, trap, plant, and weapon fit into the mix. So we kept mushing them together in one big level. It was glorious, and it was known as "the cave."

Why did the same environment stay fun for so long? What really matters in Galak-Z is the interactions between all the moving parts. Combat with intelligent squads, getting attacked by a hostile environment, weighing the risks of a deadly magma pool versus the sheer style of knocking some hapless enemy into it... As long as we kept switching it around, it kept being interesting.

Drakengard 3: Inside a Mature Story, PS3 Pre-Order Details Arrive

200°
26w ago - Square Enix Senior Product Manager Sakura Minamida shared PS3 pre-order details today for Drakengard 3 which takes fans inside a mature story.

To quote: Time is ticking down to the launch of Drakengard 3, coming exclusively to PS3 on May 20th. As of today, we've entered wave 2 of our pre-order bonuses, and fans of the developer's previous work should not miss what we're giving out.

Pre-ordering any time between now and April 9th gets you the Nier costume pack, bringing a little bit of that game's fantastic and beautiful weirdness to Drakengard 3.

You can equip Zero in the costume of everyone's favorite, foul-mouthed warrior, Kainč, or don the Replicant version of the game's protagonist. Your dragon is not forgotten either, as he can wear the awesomely creepy-faced Emil hat.

The Nier costume pack expires on April 9th, and if you pre-order by then, don't forget that you also get another bonus that we'll reveal on that day - [Register or Login to view links]

Of course, if you pre-ordered before today, you've already got the Nier costume pack included.

Spry Fox Details Road Not Taken for PS4 and PlayStation Vita

50°
26w ago - Spry Fox Chief Creative Officer Daniel Cook detailed Road Not Taken for PS4 and PlayStation Vita for fans today.

To quote: This post is about Road Not Taken, Spry Fox's upcoming roguelike for PS4 & PS Vita. If this is your first time hearing about RNT, check out our trailers [Register or Login to view links]!

As we've mentioned in previous blog posts, Road Not Taken has procedurally-generated levels. That is, you get a completely new experience every time you venture into the forest.

When designing a game like [Register or Login to view links] or God of War, a designer must hand-select the placement of every corridor, every object, and every enemy in the game.

With Road Not Taken, we're not hand-selecting anything. We spend our time creating interesting objects and enemies, and then carefully defining the probabilities of when and where you will encounter them.

The process reminds me of Duchamp's painting 'Nude descending a Staircase, No. 2'. For thousands of years, humanity painted a single instant, captured in time. Duchamp, inspired by advances in motion pictures, decided to paint all the possible states of a woman walking down the stairs in a single painting.

To me, designing a roguelike is...
