181w ago - Universal Studios is preparing to launch its line of Blu-ray / DVD hybrids known as 'Flipper discs' in 2010, which could benefit Sony's PlayStation 3.
For those curious, the hybrid discs hold a Blu-ray film on one side and a 9GB DVD version on the other.
To quote: "The technology allows a single disc to offer a 50GB Blu-Ray version of a film on one side, and a 9GB DVD version on the other. It's a plan by Universal (and most likely the rest of the Blu-ray Consortium) to increase the adoption of Blu-ray HD films by giving consumers the option to future-proof their content.
One of the key components in Sony's PlayStation 3 is its Blu-ray drive, offering gamers a chance to experience high definition movies. If the Flipper discs prove to be a popular format, it could help cement the PS3 as the home entertainment console of choice.
The first dual-format Flipper discs are due to go on sale on 19th January 2010 in the US, with the very first product being the Jason Bourne trilogy, a box set containing The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum. No pricing has yet been announced."
182w ago - Sony's Senior Vice President of Marketing & PlayStation Network Peter Dille has unveiled a new video from PS3's ad campaign today entitled 'It Only Does Blu-ray Movies.'
To quote: Next week's Thanksgiving holiday marks the kick-off to the traditional retail holiday selling season. It's a key part of our year as many people who may not be hardcore gamers begin their research for the hottest gift items. Naturally, we expect the PS3 to be on a lot of those lists this year.
This holiday's PS3 campaign marks one of our most aggressive approaches in terms of our advertising reach and frequency, so we hope you've seen the new commercials while watching your favorite TV programs.
I've been receiving a lot of emails from friends and family and hearing from a lot of you who are catching the commercials regularly and laughing even after the third or fourth helping.
We couldn't be more pleased by the overwhelming response, not just to the ads, but also evidenced by the sheer momentum behind our recent sales numbers. I'd like to personally welcome all of the new PS3 owners to what will be one of our best years ahead.
Beyond the amazing line up of Blu-ray games hitting this holiday, we're also expecting some blockbuster Blu-ray movie releases, including...
186w ago - According to Artik of French site Logic-sunrise.com, the Nintendo Wii 2 is allegedly set to arrive in 2010 and include Blu-ray and 1080p support.
This rumor appears to stem from an internal source of the marketing department at Nintendo France, however, little information is available to substantiate it unfortunately.
To quote from Ripten (linked above): "It could be that it wasn't posted on the French site itself although that wouldn't make much sense.
All in all, the rumored "leak" states that Nintendo is working on a Wii sequel with the following:
• The Wii2 system will feature a Blu-Ray drive with a secondary aim of stopping piracy.
• 1080P and lower resolutions will be supported, for blu-ray movies and games.
• The release date is scheduled for third quarter of 2010.
• The release will be worldwide and on the same day for all countries.
• A scheme will be available in which it is possible to trade in the original Wii for a cheaper price on the new Wii 2."
186w ago - Included on the District 9 Blu-ray disc available on December 29th, Sony has added a PS3 demo for God of War III for those who don't plan to check out the God of War III PS3 Demo on PSN.
Also included on the Blu-ray disc is a "Making of God of War III" video that becomes available once gamers complete the demo in its entirety.
To quote: "The Blu-Ray release of District 9, due December 29 (a bit later than the God of War Collection), will include a playable demo of God of War 3. Once you've played through the demo, a making-of featurette will be unlocked (for the game, not the movie).
While District 9 and God of War 3 are united in that they're both things that people presumably want to see, it strikes us as odd that this rather random collection is the first Blu-ray/game demo pairing for SCEA. The Watchmen movie and game actually related to one another in some way, and they came on separate discs."
