BioShock on PSN, Full Version Scheduled for October 21, 2008

100°
324w ago - No longer will PS3 gamers have to wait for Bioshock, the game that sent Xbox 360 sales into orbit last year. The Bioshock demo for PlayStation 3 is now available for download on the PlayStation Network, as expected earlier this week.

The full version of the game is scheduled for release in retail stores and online October 21, that's only 17 days away!

Bioshock for PS3 has supposedly been improved from the Xbox 360 version, although according to 2k senior producer Melissa Miller not on the graphics level. Some additions include a new "Survivor" mode where enemies are more difficult to defeat, PS3 Trophy support, and new plasmid powers.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with BioShock, it was designed by Ken Levine of 2K Games and released for XBox 360 and PC in August '07.

The game is set in 1960 and follows plane crash survivor Jack who explores the underwater world of Rapture. There he must face attacks by mutants and mechanical drones.

BioShock for PlayStation 3 - First Impressions

500°
324w ago - So I make no secret of the fact I LOVE Bioshock. It was my game of the year last year by a long way. Yeah COD4 was a great game and I am still playing that. Halo Jesus really was not the game it should of been - please don't flame me it's just my opinion and Mass Effect had too many little issues. So Bioshock really stood out for me.

So it was with great delight that I found out it was coming to my shiny black paperweight. The trouble is, would it play well on the PS3?

Well the demo hit the PSN (all regions thanks you 2k/Sony!) and I downloaded it as soon as I got home. It took a little under and hour to drop down the 1.8GB demo (holy crap demos are getting bigger !) and around ten minutes to install (go figure!).

It was with real trepidation that I launched the game and waited for the menu to roll up. First thing you notice is just how many teams worked on this game! 2K Boston, 2K Australia, Digital Extremes etc - That never sounds good!

I hit the menu, choose my game type and launch the game. The intro sequence plays out and looks just as good at the 360 version, perhaps a little higher res and cleaner. The plane ditches (spoiler!) and you struggle tot he surface - here we go, lets see if it starts to chug - No, one of my favorite parts of the game graphically looks just...

Bioshock PS3: Of Little Sisters and Ferris Wheels

50°
325w ago - Per Grant Chang (Animator, 2K Boston) via PS Blog today:

My name's Grant and I'm an animator for the BioShock Add-On Content Challenge Rooms. I was asked to spearhead any animation tasks that was needed for this project.

The development team has been working hard here at 2K Boston on these new rooms and we are closing in on the finish line. But, it has been a great experience because it got me the chance to do things I haven't done before for Bioshock.

One of our first goals was to get the Ferris Wheel in the game. The finished asset was actually physically in the original release of the game, but never used. It was a shame, because it's a really well crafted piece. So I went through the steps of breaking it apart, rigging it and getting it to move convincingly.

Then I had to learn some things about collision and getting the Little Sister to stay in the carriage without misbehaving. After a bit of elbow grease and sweat we got a functioning Ferris Wheel in engine. I hope you guys have fun playing in that room!

I also had to do quite a few more custom Little Sister animations. Revisiting the Little Sister rig from BioShock was a welcome assignment, and I found it somewhat cathartic to once again channel my inner child. My coworkers must have thought...
