Wal-Mart Begins Selling Pre-owned Video Games

550°
255w ago - Today Wal-Mart has started selling pre-owned video games in many of its US retail locations.

Apparently the chain promises that each pre-owned game is polished, tested and inspected prior to its re-sale.

To quote: "US supermarket giant Wal-Mart has begun selling pre-owned games for the first time.

The ASDA parent has previously installed trade-in kiosks in its stores - a move which has been followed by the likes of Best Buy and the UK's very own GAME.

Now, however, Wal-Mart has also launched a standalone in-store pre-owned section - suggesting its kiosk experiment has been a success.

According to the firm's [Register or Login to view links], each pre-owned game the grocer handles will be 'polished, tested and inspected prior to shipping'."

265w ago - Update: Courtesy of caliblue15 comes more 'proof' screens on [Register or Login to view links], who is also reporting that apparently it can only be played at certain times (ala Fat Princess).

Today various Web sites, including TheGamerAccess.com (linked above), are reporting that the MAG (Massive Action Game) BETA for PlayStation 3 has begun.

To quote: "I just signed onto the PlayStation Network planning to hop onto Killzone 2, when I noticed something very interesting while viewing my friends list. One of the users on my friends list was playing the MAG Beta.

I will not release any information as to who this person is, but I will tell you that he/she is an employee for Sony. Because he/she works for Sony, this version of the Beta could be available only to a select few industry employees, but this could also mean that the MAG Beta is right around the corner."

That being said, if anyone else can confirm the news feel free to comment below!

50°
288w ago - Penny Arcade has announced that PAX 2009 will take place from September 4th to the 6th at the Convention Center in Seattle, Washington.

Those interested in pre-registering can do so now [Register or Login to view links] (or linked above), and exhibitor updates will be detailed as the event draws near. To quote, in part, from the site's [Register or Login to view links]:

What is PAX?
PAX is a three-day game festival for tabletop, videogame, and PC gamers. We call it a festival because in addition to dedicated tournaments and freeplay areas we've got nerdcore concerts, panel discussions, the weekend-long Omegathon event, and an exhibitor hall filled with booths displaying the latest from top game publishers and developers.

Even with all this amazing content the best part of PAX is hanging out with other people who know their stuff when it comes to games.

How much does PAX cost?
The three-day pre-registration rate is $50, which is a $5 discount from the at-the-door price. Details and the pre-registration link can be found here. We'll be mailing pre-reg badges the second week of August, so when you register, make sure to think ahead when you enter your mailing address.

Your PAX badge is all-access, and is...

Pirate Bay Copyright Test Case Begins in Sweden

250°
288w ago - Pirate Bay co-founders Gottfrid Svartholm (pictured below, left) and Peter Sunde arrive for their trial at Stockholm's city court on February 16, 2009.

Pirate Bay co-founders Svartholm, Sunde, Fredrik Neij and Carl Lundstrom were charged by a Swedish prosecutor with conspiracy to break copyright law and being an accessory.

A number of companies, including SonyBMG, are asking for damages of over $12 million to cover lost revenues.

To quote: A copyright test case involving one of the world's biggest free file-sharing websites that could help music and film companies recoup millions of dollars in lost revenues started on Monday in Stockholm.

Four men linked to The Pirate Bay were charged early last year by a Swedish prosecutor with conspiracy to break copyright law and related offences.

Companies including Warner Bros., MGM, Columbia Pictures, 20th Century Fox Films, Sony BMG, Universal and EMI are also asking for damages of more than 100 million crowns ($12 million) to cover lost revenues.

Sites like The Pirate Bay allow people to download songs, movies and computer games without paying and the trial is being closely watched to see to what extent the entertainment industry can protect copyright against Internet users.
