31w ago - Sony Digital Distribution Senior Manager Pierre Gravereau announced today that a new Indie Games Category is coming to PlayStation Store today.
To quote: With innovative gaming experiences now more diverse than ever, PlayStation and Sony Network Entertainment are proud to stand behind indie-led development with the introduction of a new PlayStation Store "Indie Games" category coming later today.
This category builds on the support that PlayStation has offered independent developers in the effort to highlight some of the most unique gaming experiences on PlayStation platforms.
Most recently, we released four stellar independently developed games during our recent Spring Fever event on the PlayStation Store. We also showcased upcoming PS3 and PS Vita games from indie developers along with highlighting two new games coming to the PS4 during our recent Indie Arcade at GDC.
This new category will house all of our latest indie titles in one convenient place.
Be on the lookout for some of our greatest hits, including surreal puzzle title Unfinished Swan and award-winning PSN exclusive Journey.
You can also find some of our newest indie games such as the colorful Metroidvania-style PSN game Guacamelee!...
31w ago - Frapefrukt Games' Martin Jonasson showcased Rymdkapsel today, covering the minimalist space strategy and you with details below.
To quote: A year ago, I started making a game about a space station. I wanted to make a game that had all the fun parts of an RTS but none of the fiddly, stressful bits. The more I removed, the better the game became and that's how Rymdkapsel came into being.
Rymdkapsel is a game about building your station; imagine a real time strategy game where you don't have to worry about ever leaving the cozy comforts of your home base.
It's not all smooth sailing though, when your base grows bigger as does your need for space and resources. All this expansion will surely attract the attention of the dreaded enemy. This leaves you with the task of balancing your quest for expansion with the safety of a small, tight, structure.
The philosophy of less is more goes on right through the entire game. This idea of removing-to-make-better isn't a new one for sure, it's something I've been exploring in many prototypes for years.
I've made a one button dungeon crawler (glorg), an implementation of Tetris that only requires one dimensional touch input and a crazy tower defense that lets you skip around in time to get to the fun bits faster.
32w ago - Fallen Tree Games Art Director Lewis Boadle revealed today that Quell Memento is sliding to PS Vita soon!
To quote: In developing Quell Memento for PS Vita, we realized that the project was first started 20 years ago!
You see, the game prototype was originally created on an Amstrad CPC computer, way back in 1993! Having said that, it was very different back then - it was called "Last of the Smileys" and was a lot more 8-bit in style.
As we set about improving the game for a modern release, we knew that we wanted to have a much more unique visual style. After much discussion, we decided upon a gentle old-fashioned look, in part because we read that the human brain is more intelligent when it is relaxed.
Quell Memento is intended to feel familiar, and to evoke feelings of nostalgia. After all, a game called Memento is always going to be about memories!
For this reason, we wanted all the elements to be recognizable from the real world (water droplets, pearls and roses, for example). This would mean, we felt, that the player is able to establish the rules of play quickly, because they know that a pearl is valuable, or that a thorn will likely burst a droplet.
We also decided that the puzzles would be set within an old abandoned house. What could...
