PlayStation 3 Home: New room or a re-design?

50°
322w ago - Update: The space is called the Media Event Room where Sony will be able to bring content from different conventions right onto PSN through Home. Now you can feel like your in the convention yourself without even attending! Now if we can get live coverage that would be the bit hit for this room. Regardless we got three news screens below showing off what's currently inside.

mbsaeger of the PlayStation forums found some interesting content in the Home video from Leipzig Game Convention.

The screenshots below were shown in the video for nearly a split second, and most users who commented have yet to see this room. If you view the images below you will notice that the room connects to several other spaces that specialize in different games.

One for example being Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty seen in the second picture. Also if you have a sharp eye you might notice the Resistance logo on the right side of the third picture.

Innervision96x who claims to be a BETA tester has posted in the thread commenting that the room is locked off to BETA testers.

"Nope, it's currently the only location locked off..."

First PlayStation 3 Firmware 2.5 Details Available; Screen Grabbing

200°
322w ago - CVG has learnt that Sony's next firmware update for PlayStation 3 will include an option for screen grabbing, allowing you to take your own shots of what you get up to on your PS3.

A development source has told CVG that PS3 firmware update 2.5 is rumored to have screen grabbing built in.

Exactly how this would be done and what you could do with the shots once you've grabbed a piece of the action isn't yet known. But you've got to reckon that uploading them to a server and showing off and using the images as themes would be a safe bet.

Sony hasn't announced anything about a 2.5 update yet and won't even discuss the subject.

We'll file this one under 'wait and see' for the time being.

Video: PlayStation 3's XDR RAM Explained

100°
322w ago - At the heart of Sony Computer Entertainment's breakthrough PLAYSTATION 3 system is the Cell Broadband Engine (Cell BE) processor. The Cell BE is a multi-core processor employing a PowerPC processor element (PPE) and seven synergistic processor elements (SPE) to provide supercomputer capability in a home computer entertainment system. The Cell BE is capable of 218 GFlops performance.

PS3 as we all know is powered by 256mb of GDDR3 RAM and 256mb of XDR at ultrafast speed of 3.2ghz. The XDR RAM has a very low latency and is more efficient than contemporary PC RAMs.

So what exactly is XDR RAM and why is it superior to conventional PC RAM?

Preview: Killzone 2 for PlayStation 3

50°
322w ago - What's the game about? By now you should be nicely familiar with Sony's long awaited first-person shooter for the PS3. It's been the highlight of several of the company's E3 press conferences, and has been steadily gaining hype as we've seen its cinematic visuals nearing the experience Guerrilla set out to achieve in the incredible target video released early on.

What's new for Games Convention? At E3 last month, Sony gave a rundown of all the multiplayer options that Killzone 2 will support -- a pretty darn substantial offering. At the Leipzig Games Convention, Sony allowed us to actually get our hands-on the multiplayer game. Sony also confirmed that there will be AI bot support, allowing you to include bots in multiplayer games for when there's not enough human players in a match; according to Sony, they'll mimic human behavior so well it'll be hard to realize the difference. Unfortunately, we didn't get to see them in action to judge this for ourselves.

What's our take? Up until now I'd viewed Killzone 2 primarily as a single player experience -- it's always just struck me as a very cinematic FPS, making an emphasis on story and staged events. Having played it for a good while at Leipzig, I'm convinced the multiplayer is getting just as much attention -- Killzone 2's multiplayer should be able to hang...
