Qore: An upcoming PlayStation magazine from Sony?

50°
329w ago - SCEA recently filed a trademark for "Qore" that is believed to be for an online magazine destined for the PSN. It is described as "computer services, namely, providing interactive online magazine and entertainment services in the field of video games."

To quote: Sony has had success directly getting in touch with fans via the PlayStation Blog. Perhaps, they have a plan to extend their reach further with something called Qore. A trademark under that name was registered by Sony Computer Entertainment America, but this isn't for a game. Qore's services are related to "computer services, namely, providing interactive online magazine and entertainment in the field of video games."

Since Qore is "in the field of video games" it pretty much narrows the trademark down to the PlayStation brand unless Sony has another video game brand coming out in the future. The "interactive online magazine" piece is the most intriguing piece of information from the trademark.

Could Qore, which sounds like core, be a counter to the Everybody's Nintendo channel? I can imagine Sony releasing an online magazine on the PlayStation Store with information about upcoming games.

Of course, this is just a trademark. Sony...

PlayStation Day: No XMB mention, but PSN Showcase Trailer!

That being said, Sony did share a PlayStation Network Showcase trailer today.

Below is a video showcasing the PlayStation Network and a sneak peak at up coming content:

PlayStation Network: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly

329w ago - Digital games downloads for consoles are in a fascinating position right now. We've previously discussed the state of console downloadable games - as well as a more detailed discussion of royalty rates for Xbox Live Arcade.

But the state of PlayStation Network for indie games is significantly less-discussed - actually, for some potentially interesting reasons. A starting point would be this interview with Sony's Scott Steinberg conducted at GDC, discussing Microsoft's announcement of Xbox Live Community Games. Steinberg's response to that:

"I thought it was interesting in the sense that what they were talking about we've sort of been doing for the last couple of years with PSN and giving smaller, start-up, entrepreneurial developers the chance to get in and make their games available on the PSN."

Well, yes and no. The biggest issue here - and what I find somewhat disingenuous of Sony - is that Microsoft is trying hard and genuinely to open up its platform to everyone (though they do have significant XBLA-related royalty issue and game complexity/submission headaches to work through).

And Sony is trashing them on the basis of PSN - which is actually somewhat of a closed platform right now, save some inspired and to-be-lauded cherrypicking.

The First-Party PSN...
