176w ago - Sony has been quite vocal on PS3 3D lately, updating their PSN ToS and outlining plans for 3D movie and photo PlayStation 3 Firmware updates, and today GamaSutra.com (linked above) has confirmed Darkworks and TriOviz have partnered to bring an official PS3 3D SDK to the PlayStation 3 3D Middleware Program for licensed developers.
To quote: "Launching with little support for console games, 3D TVs present a chicken-and-egg dilemma; consumers are waiting for a critical mass of 3D content to justify the purchase while developers are waiting for an installed base of 3D TVs that justifies the development investment," said longtime graphics technology expert Jon Peddie.
He described TriOviz's tech as "an excellent bridging solution" allowing gamers to "play the same 3D console title on their existing HDTVs and then on their new 3D TVs."
176w ago - Today Sony's Network Operations VP Eric Lempel has confirmed that PS3 Firmware Update 3.41 is coming soon alongside PSP Firmware Update 6.31, both of which will add PlayStation Store Recommendations.
To quote: The next PlayStation 3 (PS3) system software update is coming soon. Firmware update 3.41 will add recommendations for games and videos on PlayStation Store.
When you're browsing through the details of a particular title, you'll see a new "You May Like" section on the right-hand side. This section lists additional items based on the purchases of other PlayStation Network members who have purchased the item you're currently looking at.
You can then click on this section to zoom in on the list and scroll the recommended titles.
This feature is a great way to discover new games that you may not know about, and it's another step toward making the shopping experience easier and better for you all – similar to the five-star ratings feature we added in the last firmware update.
Please note that while the 3.41 update will be released shortly, the recommendations feature on PlayStation Store is slated to go live by the end of July.
In addition to this PS3 update, the next PSP (PlayStation Portable) firmware update (v.6.31) will be coming...

177w ago - SCEE's Home Community Lead Alex Weekes has revealed today that 'Mystery of the Wise Man' is arriving in the new Square on PlayStation Home this week.
To quote: While this week is quiet one for new content, it's an update full of mystery. One of the benefits of our new Home Square is that we can, from time to time, make changes to the content found within the space.
Over the coming weeks your Home Square will take on a new look as the current mini-games make way for a new series of features and mini-games.
Our first such change will happen this week, with Shooting Hoops making way for a visit from a wise old man. Those who approach the wise man may be gifted with a cryptic message in the form of a philosophical saying. Can you decipher the mystery of the wise man?
Drop into the stores this week to pick up some great gear from Lockwood. Included in this week's release are animated sneakers and hoodies (both male and female) and cropped tops with tattoos (female). The Mui Mui Ship could be worth a visit this week as well, with the latest update to the Loco Roco store including another wacky new hat.
We've been tracking strong demand on the official forums for an expansion to the variety of female clothing. To help us pinpoint specific content, we're updating...
177w ago - Today Sony's Social Media Manager Jeff Rubenstein has shared answers to several Mafia II PlayStation 3 fan questions, as follows:
Last week I attended a Mafia II preview event, armed with a list of questions you wanted me to investigate.
After speaking with Director of Creative Production Jack Scalici, I left with those answers... and a tommy gun filled with tequila (seriously). Since there isn't enough in there for me to mix margaritas for all of you, I'll just cut straight to the interview.
PlayStation.Blog: Why go with Empire Bay instead of New York City?
Jack Scalici: It's New York, with a little bit of influence of Chicago, with a bit of San Francisco mixed in there. But when you do New York you have to do it right, and it has to be exact, and you'll get some psychopaths on the forums who'll take a map of New York City, and a map of your game and point out everything that you did wrong and bad and why go through that?
And also, if you've ever driven through New York, it's not the most gameplay-driving-friendly city. There are a lot of one way streets, and it's not as much fun as it could be if you were driving around doing 90 mph in a convertable blasting 1950's rock 'n' roll....
