Graphics of new ‘Ratchet & Clank’ game rival look of movies

50°
350w ago - When one thinks of the leaders in computer animation, a few familiar film studios come to mind, namely DreamWorks and Pixar.

Traditional movie companies like Fox and Warner Bros. have also made successful forays into animated fare.

Video games, however, have rarely been known for the artistry of their animation, for two reasons.

First, while they almost inevitably fall short, most video games of any genre try to look realistic – realistic cars, realistic football players, even plausibly "realistic" dragons and aliens.

But what defines great animated characters like Mickey Mouse and Shrek is not any notion of realism, but rather an exaggerated yet unthreatening expressiveness. That is one reason so few of the classic animated characters are human: anthropomorphized animals give the artist much more creative leeway.

Just as important, in those cases when designers have gone for an animated look, technology has simply not allowed games to come anywhere near the fluidity, detail and depth possible in a noninteractive film. Not to mention that game companies often undermine even brilliant graphics with lackluster voice acting.

All that changed this month with the release of Insomniac Games' "Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction" for Sony's...

Dust Voids PS3 Warranty

50°
350w ago - Just got off the phone With PS3 customer support who kindly informed me that my PS3 is "too dusty" to be replaced under warranty. But won't provide pictures unless they are subpoenaed.

I have kept my 60gb PS3 in Its entertainment center since its purchase. It is known within the PS3 community that the thing is a HUGE dust magnet. I took good care of it, I have about 10 Blu-ray discs (did NOT come free with my PS3), 5 games, 5 controllers, 2 42" Bravia LCD's 1 50" Bravia 3lcd Rear projection TV, A Vaio desktop, Vaio laptop, I've even got a psp and location free TV. One day I turn it on and put in a disc and it doesn't show up, then it wont eject, finally I get it to eject and I try a blu-ray, nothing, CDs, nothing.

I call Customer support who originally tell me that they can do anything because I don't have the original sales receipt, (it was a GIFT!!!), I stayed on the phone for hours explaining to them that I don't have thee receipt as it was a gift from my parents. Finally I got a rep who said that it was strange that earlier reps hadn't let me go through with the exchange as if it was a gift it was policy not to require a receipt. He sent me a box, I boxed up my console and sent it in.

5 days later I have no updates on the PS3, I call in to check on it, The first rep I speak to says that...

Quartermann: More MGS PSP, More Sonic Games

50°
350w ago - Plus, remember THQ's N64 wrestler No Mercy? It's coming back.

It's Friday and we're all still reeling from the news that NPD numbers won't be gracing us in the weeks ahead, but as the latest issue of EGM falls into subscriber hands, the Quartermann's able to bring you the latest rumors. And lest we forget, Quartermann was right on the money about Bionic Commando.
This month, an old rumor resurfaces in a new form, as BioShock is apparently back on for PlayStation 3. Previously, it'd been speculated that Microsoft tied up 2K Games' aquatic adventure as an exclusive, but there's a change in the tide, as the world of Rapture may be Cell-enabled in 2008, after all.

And while Metal Gear fans are pouting over the most recent Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots delay, Kojima Productions hasn't been snoozing about taking the series in other directions. While everyone else is taking their franchises to Nintendo DS, Metal Gear is sticking to PSP, with a brand-new (that's not a spin-off) game headed to the portable, this time taking Snake back to the early days of his career.

We'll leave you with two last tidbits. One, THQ's WWF: No Mercy for the Nintendo 64 is coming back via the WiiWare service with completely updated rosters. Two, the lackluster performance of Sonic the Hedgehog hasn't deterred...

Mark Rein: PS3 UT3 graphics better than Gears of War

50°
350w ago - Epic head honcho says "something special" about playing PC shooter on PS3.

PS3 UT3 has better graphics than Gears of War according to Mark Rein, Epic's vice president.

Speaking in an interview with Pro-G at the launch of the PC version of the game, Rein said that he was "really proud" of the PS3 game, which he hoped would be out in the US this year. However, due to certification issues he remained sceptical about a similar release date for the European version, instead suggesting early 2008.

He said: "People are going to be pleasantly surprised. It's a really high end experience that pushes the graphics bar up even higher than Gears of War. There's more polygons, there's more stuff going on, there's more explosions and there's more things happening, so we're just really pleased with the way the game runs on the PS3."

Epic's blockbuster third-person shooter Gears of War has proved a massive hit since its release on the Xbox 360 last year. At the time it wowed audiences with its jaw-dropping graphics and gritty portrayal of war.

When asked about the difficulties some game developers have experienced with Sony's next-gen console, the typically enthusiastic Epic boss said: "Doesn't affect us baby!"

He added: "You know, bringing a game to any new piece of hardware...

Blank Discs Inside Call Of Duty 4 At Best Buy? Better Open Them In The Store

50°
350w ago - Zak writes to tell us that his copy of Call of Duty 4 was blank. Thankfully, he opened it while he was still inside the Best Buy, so exchanging it wasn't a problem. (Though some random Geek Squad guy did accuse him of being a scammer.)
I generally read a few of the network sites, Giz, LH and of course for a chuckle I also read Consumerist. Now I lack photo proof of this as I immediately did an illegal u-turn and took my product back to the store, but I'll let you know anyways.

Yesterday I had exchanged an Xbox 360 game, 'Hour of Victory' as it was the wrong game, I wanted 'Call of Duty 4'. The girl at customer service was happy to oblige me and I was told to walk back and pick up whatever game I wanted to exchange. CoD4 wasn't on he shelf so I asked an associate walking around and she checked stock, where the title showed up in transit. She went into the back as they had just gotten a shipment earlier, and low and behold here she comes with my blessed CoD4!

I take it up front, finish my exchange and head home. Halfway there my buddy opens up this FACTORY SEALED copy and starts laughing followed by a couple choice four lettered words. I look and staring back at us out of the box is a completely virgin (even fingerprintless) disc. U-TURN! We get back to Best Buy and I walk up to the associate who had...
