Rumor: Full PS3 Backwards Compatibility Only Weeks Away?

850°
281w ago - Recently it was reported that Sony patented software-based PS2 emulation technology. This got users excited who own 80GB, 40GB and 160GB PS3 consoles without backwards compatability.

Although the article speculated that the upcoming PS3 slim may utilize this technology, today a German Web site has supposedly gained comment from a Sony employee, to quote:

This brings us to the German Web site [Register or Login to view links], which claims to have gained comment from a Sony employee stating that full backwards compatibility is coming to US PS3's as a firmware update in the "next few weeks."

If this rumor is true, it will make many newer PS3 console owners very happy indeed!

MotorStorm: Pacific Rift - Speed Weekend, Expansion: Speed Pack

50°
282w ago - Evolution Studios Game Director Jed Ashforth has announced the MotorStorm: Pacific Rift Expansion: Speed Pack as part of Speed Weekend.

To quote: While MotorStorm: Pacific Rift's online fun is still the number one all-consuming passion for many of our players, we recognize that plenty of you out there have been waiting for a whole new Single Player festival to get your teeth into.

We set the Agenda last year with our popular Revenge Weekend and Devils Weekend expansions for MotorStorm: Monument Valley, and now we're continuing that tradition with our new Speed Weekend festival that features as part of our new Expansion: Speed pack!

Make no mistake, this mode is HUGE... it's packed with unlocks, rewards and trophies, and has been designed to keep challenging you for as long as you want it to. How? Buckle up and I'll divulge some (but certainly not all) of its secrets!

We were very pleased that the speed race events in Pacific Rift were so fantastically popular - they provided a great change of focus and pace from the Eliminator and Race events, and had the scope for repeated play, and for beating your own best score.

While we'll be the first to admit the formula wasn't yet perfected, we all felt we had taken the first steps here towards something...

Left 4 Dead Creation Tools Coming Next Week

50°
283w ago - While the campaigns that shipped with Left 4 Dead were all pretty good, you do get sick of them after a while. Which is where custom, user-generated campaigns come in.

Next week, Valve will be updating Left 4 Dead so that these custom missions - like the Resident Evil 3 mod we showed you earlier in the day - are both more prominent within the userbase and are easier to download and play.

To quote: Firstly, with this update map creators will be able to package their content into a single file (a .VPK). This will make displaying, downloading and installing the campaigns a cinch for other users.

The game's matchmaking system will also be updated to reflect this, with "extensive support for custom add-on campaigns". Valve explains:

"When creating or searching for a lobby, a new option named "Add-on campaign" will let you select from among the add-on campaigns that you have installed. You can then find games or lobbies as well as create a lobby for that campaign.

You can invite your friends, too. If they do not have the campaign installed, they will automatically be offered and an option to download it."

This is all going to be made possible via the release of the game's SDK (authoring tools), which after a stint in beta are going to be officially rolled out...
