294w ago - Update: Paddy: Recently we had the good fortune of being added to Sony's mailing list for all first party titles. With all the speculative posts regarding the upcoming Firmware I just decided to chance my arm and send an email to my contact at Sony Ireland on Friday. That was the reply I got.

However she did inform me that the official announcement would be Monday, but as you can see there wasn't one. I do believe its coming today. It is a genuine post and not an April Fools joke.

According to "Paddy", Administrator of [Register or Login to view links], the new PS3 Firmware 2.70 is going to be released on the 2nd of April 2009.

To quote: With mounting speculation as to exactly when PS3 firmware version 2.70 will be released we can now reveal to you that our sources at Sony Ireland have given us a confirmation date.

April 2nd Will be the date that every PS3 gamer will now be looking forward to. Stay tuned for more as the official Announcement and images is made on Monday 30th March.

PS3 Update Checker v1.2 (Firmware Auto-Downloader) Available

295w ago - Update: PS3 Update Checker v1.3 is now available with a changelog HERE.

Here is v1.2 of my PS3 Update Checker (Firmware Auto-Downloader) which mainly includes bug fixes.

Download: PS3 Update Checker v1.2 (Firmware Auto-Downloader)

Changes:-
1. Stop the icon animating once download complete (D'OH!)
2. Messages made bit more relevant
3. Re-enable timer after download if the option was selected ! (D'OH!)
4. Misc minor improvements

ToDo:
Further to my previous update re the change from seconds to minutes - CyanCaze has suggested an amendment to the timer to check randomly (at some point between eg 1 and 10 mins) rather than at a set time to prevent any possibility of $ony blocks.

Enjoy,

PSPSwampy

295w ago - Update: [Register or Login to view links].

Further to the recent 2.70 firmware release that quickly disappeared, I've written a little app which may help out if the same thing happens again...

PS3 Update Checker v1 is a very basic tool to do just this on a windows PC with [Register or Login to view links] installed.

Download: PS3 Update Checker v1 (Firmware Auto-Downloader)

Instructions:-
1. Make sure you have .NET framework 3.5 installed and are using a PC! (Not Mac, PS3, PSP or anything else!)
2. Run PS3UpdateChecker.exe
(Feel free to virus check etc, but you will need to allow this through any firewall otherwise you'll never get your downloads!)
3. Enter the relevant URL for the ps3-updatelist.txt file for your region.

PS3 Firmware 2.70 Released, Removed and Coming This Week!

700°
295w ago - Earlier today, from GDC '09 a PS3 Firmware 2.70 announcement by Sony was rumored.

While we don't have an official word yet, PS3 Firmware 2.70 was confirmed present by [Register or Login to view links] (props to ssneeky10 for the link) including some of the resident PS3 Devs, albeit briefly, on Sony's servers before being removed.

Chances are either a last-minute issue with it was found, or it was mistakenly put it up for download and removed, similar to what happened for Life with PlayStation.

To quote: Just got this from a prominent PS3 developer at GDC: "PS3 Firmware 2.70 definitely this week. Developers got it yesterday."

The update was rumored to have gone live this afternoon, but was apparently withdrawn. Watch for an announcement in the next few days.

GDC '09 Rumor: PS3 Firmware 2.70 to be Announced Today?

650°
295w ago - According to the folks over at TheSixthAxis (linked above), rumor has it Sony may make an announcement today on PS3 Firmware Update 2.70.

To quote: It's GDC 2009 over in California, and our ears are to the ground.

We've had to put up with the rumor mill grinding about Firmware 2.70 for a while now, but we've heard more recently gossip in and amongst our [Register or Login to view links] overnight hinting that Sony are about to announce Firmware 2.70 for the PS3, and there appeared to be some maintenance on the network this morning, according to MGO's in-game notices.

Whether this will come to fruition or not we'll have to wait and see, but it has been a while since the last update; so whilst we're not expecting cross-game chat it would be nice to get something out of GDC.
