PS3 Debug Firmware Update 2.52 Now Available!

650°
293w ago - Over a month ago papa44 made mention [Register or Login to view links] that he was planning to share PS3 Debug Firmware Update 2.52 with our community. Sadly, after stating he was uploading it he never replied again... and to date has been online only lurking.

Just recently I ran across it myself, but since it didn't come with any documentation all I had was a PS3UPDAT.PUP file that WinHex showed as being "2.52" (122 MB - 128,615,182 bytes).

The good news is, CJPC was able to successfully install and confirm for us that it is indeed a legitimate PS3 2.52 Debug Firmware update file, and as a result we have now added it to our [Register or Login to view links] section for those interested!

Some changes CJPC noticed during his brief time testing it out were as follows: It now includes Network emulation and you can now save the PUP files on the PS3 HDD and access them later.

For example, if you click System Update, then Install from HDD, it will give you a list of PUPs stored on the HDD which can be installed. Additionally, all of the PS3 [Register or Login to view links]...

PS2 Games on PS Store via PS3 Firmware Compatibility Update?

300°
302w ago - For the time being this is simply a rumor, however, French site JV247.com (linked above) is reporting that a game publisher told them Sony was planning to add PlayStation 2 backwards compatibility in a recent PlayStation 3 Firmware Update... but pulled it at the last minute.

They continue to mention that it may be added in a future update, and that we may see PlayStation 2 games on the PlayStation Store.

Adding fuel to the rumor is news that the original Medal of Honor and the ESRB-rated PlayStation 2 game "Rayman 2: Revolution" are slated for the PlayStation 3, which usually means they're going to pop up on the PlayStation Store at some point in the future.

As always, more details to come as they are available!

PS3 Firmware 2.50 Incompatible with Sony Home Theatres?!

50°
309w ago - IGN Australia (linked above) is reporting that the new PlayStation 3 Firmware 2.50 is incompatible with their Sony amp/receiver and greets them with a black screen. As soon as they cut the 7.1 Sony amp/receiver supporting 1080p over HDMI out of the picture, things worked which to them is "utterly boggling". Sony is yet to comment on this issue...

To quote: Last week Sony released firmware 2.50 for the PS3. However, in a bizarre turn of events the latest firmware prevents the PS3 from displaying an image on some state-of-the-art Sony home theatres.

We installed firmware 2.50 yesterday only to be greeted by a blank screen. After much swearing and trouble-shooting we discovered it was the Sony amp/receiver that was incompatible with the new firmware. We were able to get a picture again by cutting the Sony amp out of the loop and going straight into the projector.

For the record the IGN AU PS3 setup includes a 7.1 Sony amp/receiver supporting 1080p over HDMI and a 1080p Sony projector. The fact that the new firmware renders the PS3 unusable with this top-line Sony home theatre is utterly boggling.

On a related note, while trouble-shooting the problem we hooked the PS3 up to the projector via composite and also found that it's currently only displaying a black and white image over this...

PS3 Firmware Update 2.50 Marks the End of BD-J Homebrew?

250°
309w ago - Japanese developer Bu-nyan has posted on his page (linked above) the following:

"※FW2.50でBD-Jが起•–なくなりま–た。
バージョンアッ––て–ま£たので'-は停止ですorz"

Roughly translated, tmaster has concluded the following:

"FW2.50 not start in the BD-J.
Upgrade to stop so we can update orz"

I don't know if Bu-nyan is saying its ok to upgrade or not.

Update: I can confirm that bd-j don't work with 2.50. I tried it on my brothers ps3 and it gives me an error. good thing I still have mine at 2.43 to play java.

Why sony stopped I don't know.. maybe a hack, who knows?

Note: FYI, although most of the PS3 Devs are sleeping CJPC said the following on IRC: "It probably is on, but they may have changed it a bit.. possibly to only work from a pressed bd-rom or some bs, which, still makes 0 sense. bd-j functionality is CORE for any bd player.. at profile 2.0 that the ps3 has (or 1.1, can't recall) so bd-j is not off, something just changed with it."

That being said, it may explain why Bu-nyan and others are reporting BD-J as not working... when...
