PS3 Firmware Update 2.50 Marks the End of BD-J Homebrew?

250°
305w ago - Japanese developer Bu-nyan has posted on his page (linked above) the following:

"※FW2.50でBD-Jが起•–なくなりま–た。
バージョンアッ––て–ま£たので'-は停止ですorz"

Roughly translated, tmaster has concluded the following:

"FW2.50 not start in the BD-J.
Upgrade to stop so we can update orz"

I don't know if Bu-nyan is saying its ok to upgrade or not.

Update: I can confirm that bd-j don't work with 2.50. I tried it on my brothers ps3 and it gives me an error. good thing I still have mine at 2.43 to play java.

Why sony stopped I don't know.. maybe a hack, who knows?

Note: FYI, although most of the PS3 Devs are sleeping CJPC said the following on IRC: "It probably is on, but they may have changed it a bit.. possibly to only work from a pressed bd-rom or some bs, which, still makes 0 sense. bd-j functionality is CORE for any bd player.. at profile 2.0 that the ps3 has (or 1.1, can't recall) so bd-j is not off, something just changed with it."

That being said, it may explain why Bu-nyan and others are reporting BD-J as not working... when...

306w ago - TheSixthAxis (linked above) is reporting that the PS3 Firmware v2.50 update will be released sometime in the week, between the 13th and 19th of October.

To quote:

Our friends over at eLhabib have just let us know that the next PS3 Firmware update will be between the 13th and the 19th of October.

Basically, at some point next week. There should also be another PSP update around the same time.

PS Home Manager: PS3 Firmware 2.5, Home 1.0 in October

500°
309w ago - A PlayStation Home BETA participant with access to a restricted PlayStation Forums thread has passed along a potential release month -- October -- for the next major PlayStation 3 firmware update (v2.50), PS3 Fanboy reports.

The date was suggested by Home manager "TedTheDog" who clarified, "late October is my guess." The update will supposedly include a bug fix for freezing and network errors currently affecting Home users.

Ted (just "Ted" is okay, right?) also hints that Home v1.00 could coincide with firmware v2.50's release -- Home is currently at v0.98.

Common sense, while not always a part of Sony's repertoire, tells us that Home 1.0 is the version that goes public -- we'll see.

PS3 Firmware 2.43 Enables GT5's Advanced Downloading Feature

309w ago - According to issa3032: Install the optional Firmware 2.43 update, and the system actually seems more resposive. Anyway, I booted up Gran Turismo 5 and was browsing around the options when I noticed something interesting: When you uncheck the "Disable Advanced Downloading" it asks you to "accept" or "decline".

In the past you used to get a warning message saying this feature would be enabled in a future firmware update. Well this message no longer pops up. I guess now we know what the firmware update did in addition to speeding up the XMB.

Note to others: "Unlike previous updates, firmware v2.43 is specific to the Japan region, and only PS3 users there will be required to install the update."

Video can be seen below.. Enjoy!

PS3 Firmware Update 2.43 Released; Mandatory in Japan Only!

300°
309w ago - To quote Al De Leon (PR Manager, SCEA) via PS Blog:

Hi, everyone, I wanted to give you a heads up about PS3 firmware update (v2.43). Unlike previous updates, firmware v2.43 is specific to the Japan region, and only PS3 users there will be required to install the update. PS3 users in all other regions will not be prompted to download v2.43. However, if you manually initiate a firmware update by clicking on "System Update" under the XMB's Settings icon, the v2.43 update will be available, regardless of where you are located.

Download: PS3 Firmware 2.43 (US) / PS3 Firmware 2.43 (EU)

Users outside of Japan do not need to perform this update if your PS3 system software is on version v2.41 or later. However if you do perform the update, it will not cause any issues with your system or add any new functionality.
