Sony Anticipates PlayStation Home to Boost PlayStation 3 Sales

50°
301w ago - Kaz Hirai has indicated that he expects PlayStation Home to boost sales of the PS3 this Holiday period. Moreover, he added that he expects the gaming division of Sony to be less affected by the current adverse economic conditions.

To quote: A Sony Corp. executive told the Wall Street Journal this month that the company expects the new online universe 'Home' to boost sales of the Playstation 3 this holiday.

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Chairman and Group CEO Kaz Hirai told the publication that Home, which will allow PS3 owners to mingle in a virtual world, will be available by the end of the year.

Hirai added that he expects the company's game unit to be less affected by current economic conditions.

Sony in Sept. 2007 delayed the Home online service to spring 2008. It subsequently delayed the project to the end of the year.

Sony will sell a new 160GB PS3 bundle in Nov. next to the current 80GB SKU.

Firmware 5.0 Demo: PlayStation Store on PSP

250°
301w ago - Per Grace Chen (Senior Manager, PLAYSTATION Store) today:

Hi everyone, as Eric mentioned in his post yesterday, we wanted to give you a live demo of the PSP's direct access to PlayStation Store, which will be coming with the 5.00 firmware update.

Now whenever your PSP is connected to the Internet over WiFi, you'll be able to download and enjoy the latest games, demos and trailers on the go without needing to sync up to your PS3 or PC. Here's a brief walk-through of what you'll experience.

On a related note, the PS3 firmware update (2.50) will add Flash Player 9 support to the PS3 Web browser, so you'll be able to actually watch this video (and all of our blog videos) on your PS3 once the firmware goes live!

In addition, I want to point out that the PlayStation Network is scheduled to be unavailable in North America today from 11AM to 4PM PST due to essential maintenance work.

PlayStation 3 Firmware Update 2.50 adds Flash 9 Support

400°
301w ago - Slated for release tomorrow, PlayStation 3's upcoming 2.50 firmware includes support for Flash 9 via the console's Web browser alongside various changes.

Eurogamer has also been told that you'll be able to see optional EXIF (exchangeable image file format) information while viewing photos.

And finally for the things that weren't mentioned yesterday, the Y and Z and Q and A keys have been remapped for the German on-screen keyboard. Gut.

Things we already knew about Firmware 2.5:

• Pads and the PS3 itself now have tweakable power-save settings for turning off after a period of inactivity.
• You can tell the PS3 to power down once it's finished downloading or installing content.
• In-game screenshots can be taken in compatible games.
• It enables high-quality mode for the official PS3 Bluetooth headset.
• The Trophy interface has been improved, so you can see you and your friends' progress more easily.
• Friends now have their last login time listed.
• Videos now have a scene search feature.
• There's a button on the PlayStation Store frontpage for redeeming codes.

PSP Firmware 5.0 Hands-On: PlayStation Network on the PSP

50°
301w ago - Ever since the introduction of the PlayStation Network, I have been complaining about the PSP's inability to support its use. Well it looks like Sony is finally going to make me eat crow, as they announced full PSN integration into the newest PSP firmware update.

Details on PSP firmware 5.0 had been lacking, but Joystiq was able to get hands-on time with the newest update while attending the Tokyo Game Show:

"PSP firmware 5.0 ushers in the PS Store for PSP. With the exception of a separate video storefront, it is functionally identical to the PS3's PS store, including the option to enter PSN Card numbers and voucher codes from within. The final content categories are still being finalized, but the build we tried featured sections for downloadable games, UMD Legacy games, themes, video, and music. SCEA isn't saying whether it plans to offer digital releases all future UMD-based games day-and-date via the service like SCE Japan is.

The rest of the PSP updates are fairly low-key. PlayStation Network now has its own spot on the PSP XMB, just as it does on PS3. (This is where the PS Store lives.) There's now a sleep timer function for music playback and a new XMB background theme - basically a...
