Global PlayStation 3 Releases for the Week of December 7, 2008

50°
307w ago - Sonic Unleashed. That's it. Though, if you're in Europe you won't even be getting your hands on that until next week.

Otherwise, Asia catches up with the rest of the world with Mirror's Edge. Hear that? That's the sound of your wallet breathing a sigh of relief. The end of year barrage of titles is over.

Here's the list in handy bullet point form:

US Games

• Sonic Unleashed

EU Games

• No new releases

Asian Games

• Mirror's Edge
• Wall-E

Release dates are constantly subject to change. Your PS3 will play import titles, so if you're a Euro Sonic fan go ahead and import it if you like. Keep in mind, though, that if there's any DLC in the future, you will have to grab it from the American PSN Store.

Five PlayStation 3 RPG Games Being Worked On Internally at Sony

250°
308w ago - Shuhei Yoshida finally answers the burning question on many, many, many hardcore gamers minds... Where are the RPG's?!

In a poorly translated Japanese interview from a recent Famitsu magazine, a good soul who visits the site has been able to piece together 3 things for us:

1 - Sony is disappointed in their Japanese business model at the moment
2 - Sony is working on 3rd party relations
3 - Sony is developing 5 RPG's internally for their fanbase

While we already knew 2 of those things we, or at least I, didn't know the last one... I remember seeing an incredible looking series of screenshots from the now defunct Gamesblow's Web site in which he said were Legend of Dragoon 2... they were absolutely mind blowing for an RPG.

I can only hope one of these is in fact LOD2. We also know Dark Cloud 3 is being worked on... but the other 3 seem like a mystery to me.

A direct, not entirely accurate reading, of the snippet:

FM - A strong interest here in Japan is in role playing or deep strategy based games, why has Sony not played to these strengths with the PS3?

Shuhei Yoshida - The inception of a console is one of trial and error. It is never one set path one takes to success and success should never come from an easy path. When...

50°
308w ago - Best Buy Co. Inc. stores will price cut select game titles for Sony Corp.'s Playstation 3 and Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox 360 in a new week-long video game sale.

Beginning Dec. 7, Konami Corp.'s Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3) will be discounted to $39.99, $10 off the MSRP. Additionally, Dangerous Hunts 2009 (PS3) will be sold at $$29.99, $10 off the MSRP, and The Simpsons Game (PS3) at $9.99 after a $10 savings.

Discounted Xbox 360 titles include Tom Clancy's EndWar at $39.99, Civil War at $29.99, Legendary at $39.99, and Far Cry 2 at $39.99.

Retailers have held a range of new video game sales to spur consumer spending in a tough economic climate.

Amazon.com is offering $50 off the purchase of Sony Corp.'s Playstation 3, game, Blu-ray disc, and remote in a new high-definition promotion.

Additionally, it restocked the backwards compatible PS3 80GB Metal Gear Solid 4 SKU at $499.99.
This week, the retailer began a new '15 Days, 15 Deals' promotion that offers a new video game deal each day for 15 consecutive days.

Microsoft on Sept. 5 discounted all Xbox 360 hardware in the U.S. between $50 to $80.

The company this week said that the Xbox 360 hardware outsold the PS3 by 3-to-1 on Black Friday, according to internal retail data sales figures

Video: Eight Minutes of WET Gameplay for PlayStation 3

50°
308w ago - While the publishing fate of WET for PlayStation 3 (and Xbox 360) remains in limbo, developer A2M from Montreal is still proceeding with their hot gun-totting action game WET.

The game tells the story of Rubi, an acrobatic, sword-wielding gun-for-hire who agrees to help a wealthy man find and bring back his wayward son. Soon enough all hell breaks loose and the tables are turned, as the man who hired her isn't who he appeared to be. Now Rubi's on the run, needing to find the man who left her for dead and leaving a massive body count in her wake.

A2M Senior Artistic Technical Director, David Lightbown, presented an exclusive 8 minute video of WET gameplay at MIGS 2008 and NextGen Player was given special permission to record the clip.

Note: The video below contains content that is mature (violence). Viewer discretion is advised.

After watching the video I think you'll agree with me that Activision may have made a poor choice dropping this game. This game looks hot.

PlayStation 3 XMB Plus Open Source Equals Awesomeness

350°
308w ago - The PlayStation 3 can probably be considered one of the most customizable consoles on the market. With the ability to upgrade you HDD, use external USB devices, Bluetooth peripherals, install open source operating systems (Linux/Unix) and freely customize your own XMB theme, the PS3 gives users a freedom of choice that was never previously established in console gaming until this generation.

Not to say that it's really "open" in the sense where programmers, like myself, don't really have the ability to access any hardware acceleration in the RSX because of restrictions by a hypervisor (software systems that run directly on the PS3 as a hardware control and guest operating system monitor) in the available Linux/Unix flavors; this limits any 3D operations that can be done on the PS3 whilst running Linux.

But gamers don't really need to worry about crap like that. That's reserved more for the bewildered geeks that get a stiffy trying to comprehend the internal workings of any system - let alone the PS3.

But what if Sony took off the shackles currently limiting user control of the PS3? What if Sony decided to give users the ability to fully customize and control their interactivity and interface?

To finally change that sonata chime at startup to something more you (not...
