Rumor: PS3 Firmware 2.80 Included Cinematic 21:9 TV Support?

350°
285w ago - According to TheSixthAxis.com (linked above), Sony's recent PS3 Firmware 2.80 Update may have included yet another 'hidden' feature that was not uncovered in the changelog compilation... specifically, Cinematic 21:9 TV support.

To quote: "The first [Register or Login to view links] was unveiled this year and is now available if you've got the cash to splash, and whilst the 2560 x 1080p resolution set sounds like a blessing for movie fans not happy with black bars on their 'regular' widescreen TVs, game developers surely won't pick up the better-than-HD resolution for some time.

That won't stop Sony pushing the actual XMB display out further than 1920 pixels, though - as far as we know HDMI 1.3 - the format used in the PS3 firmware at the moment - can support the resolution just fine and hopefully there's no reason why the PS3's OS can't too."

That being said, Sony has made no comment on this yet so it's essentially speculation until someone with a new ultra wide-screen 21:9 TV can confirm it.

287w ago - Although it is still some time away (Super_Secret predicts PS3 Firmware 3.0 won't be out during the summer, but before the holidays) the folks at VG247 (linked above) have uncovered some additional details on it.

To quote: The software upgrade has been described to us as "a huge overhaul", and was compared to NXE "in some respects".

The before-rumored reputation system will be included. We were told that, "A reputation system in which users will be able to evaluate each other will be provided for... game applications.

"There will be a new API available to so the user can... allow users and also obtain users' reputation."

A "grief reporting system" will be included in the update, allowing gamers to take screens of offensive players and submit them to Sony. Apparently this is going to be similar to the LBP system, and is likely to include a text input.

PS3 Firmware 2.80 Update Changes Detailed

550°
287w ago - Despite Eric Lempel's statement about PS3 Firmware 2.80 only improving the playback quality of some PS3 format software, a few other changes have surfaced as well.

Both PS3Attitude (linked above) and GrandpaHomer have reported that the recently added Text Chat feature has now increased the maximum limit of characters from 32 to 64 per line.

It also has been reported that when using the official Sony Bluetooth Headset the microphone volume has been locked at level 3, without the ability to change it.

As mentioned yesterday, Open Remote Play (ORP) is currently not working properly in PS3 Firmware 2.80.

Since inception, the PS3 has prioritized devices plugged into the front of the console... meaning if you leave your Guitar Hero, Buzz, or Rock Band 'dongles' plugged in your Wireless controller is not number one. However, as of PS3 Firmware Update 2.80 the Wireless controller does gets assigned to number one.

Finally,...
