EA pushes ad-backed video games

50°
349w ago - Electronic Arts is to release a free online version of the popular Battlefield game to be supported by adverts and micro payments.

The PC game, Battlefield Heroes, will be available only online later this year, and will not be sold in shops.

The move marks EA's first major attempt to tap into new sources of ad-driven revenue in Western markets.

The firm has a free version of its Fifa game in South Korea, earning more than $1m a month through in-game sales.

"Online gaming has a massive audience," said EA's Gerhard Florin, in a statement.

"People want to play games in new ways, with easier access that is quick to the fun. With Battlefield Heroes, EA brings its first major franchise to North America and Europe with a new distribution model and pricing structure adapted to the evolving way that people play."

Digital distribution

The video games industry is taking its first steps away from a retail-focused sales environment and towards digital distribution.

EA hopes the model of a free game as download that is supported by adverts and micro-payments could be applied to other franchises it owns.

PSP Media Manager Now Free To Download

50°
354w ago - Sony's PSP Media Manager is a decent enough piece of software. You click, you drag, you browse, it gets the job done. Only problem is, for some ridiculous reason, you have to pay for it. Stupid!

Stupid in the West, at least: Sony have announced that Japanese consumers can now download the software free of charge from their PlayStation Store. Sucky news for us, right? Not even close. Fumble your way through the Japanese install and you'll find the program itself runs in English. Perfect, legible, sweet English. I just installed it, used it, tested it, it all works. You can download it from the link below courtesy of the Japanese PlayStation Store.

Ubisoft: We don't know what is causing Assassin's Creed PS3 issues

50°
356w ago - Ubisoft Spokesperson Michael Beadle has commented that Ubisoft doesn't know what exactly is causing the freezing problems on Assassin's Creed for the PS3. Ubisoft is investigating the matter but noted a drop in complaints from PS3 gamers who turned off the automated loging feature of PSN.

To quote: We spoke with Michael Beadle, Ubisoft's senior public-relations manager, about the freezing problems. He says Ubisoft is investigating the matter and is not exactly sure what's causing the glitches.

The company noted a drop in complaints once PS3 gamers noticed that turning off the automated login feature on the PlayStation Network, or PSN, reduced the number of crashes. We tried this, but the game still crashed.

Ubisoft is working on a patch for the problems using feedback from gamers and blogs, Beadle says.
