50°
316w ago - Recently Microsoft detailed the Themes 2.0 and Friends Channel from their new XBox Experience. Today, Microsoft has launched their New XBox Experience Web site (linked above), despite not offering a specific release date for it yet.

The Web site has been modelled in the style of navigation which will be present in the update that is due out later this year.

To quote: Welcome to the New Xbox Experience!

Get a glimpse of what the New Xbox Experience is all about-the destination for social gaming and entertainment.

What is it?
Enter the ultimate social entertainment experience. Connect with your favorite people and enjoy more games and entertainment online than with any other device connected to your TV. Welcome to the New Xbox Experience. Jump in.

How do I get it?
You don't have to do anything, really. The update will download just like a normal system update would. You will see a status bar letting you know how long it will take, and you won't be able to use the console during this time. Once the update finishes the console will reload into the welcome page, and you will be able to begin exploring the new features and experiences on Xbox 360.

Microsoft admits spying on Web users

50°
322w ago - Software king of the world Microsoft has defended its ad-targeting practices, claiming that it is a lot more responsible than others.

In a document for a House committee Microsoft has more or less admitted collecting data on its web users. Redmond said that it began collecting data outside its own Web sites in 2006, when it launched a third-party ad network, and that activity accelerated after the acquisition of aQuantive in 2007.

Microsoft said that while it started by offering an "opt-out" option on all pages on which it serves ads starting in the Spring. Users were falling over themselves to sign up to give their data to Microsoft. Only 1,800 users had said no.

Although apparently finding the opt-out option on Microsoft's page is just as easy as hunting the Snark or finding the Holy Grail.

Microsoft says it's getting caned in the online ad business and the committee should look at Yahoo and Google if they want to see who the bad guys are.

Site News- Attention All: Web server, RSS, Forum Issues?

50°
326w ago - If you, or anyone you know, is having trouble accessing our Web site or Site Forums please let us know and include the following details:

• PC OS (Windows, Linux, etc)
• Web Browser and Version (Internet Explorer, FireFox, etc)
• Geographic Location (US, EU, etc)
• ISP (if you feel comfortable)
• Firewall/Internet Security Software (Norton, McAfee, etc)

For the last week or so we've been having some Web server issues, hence the delayed Site News updates, ranging from our Portal to RSS and Forum issues. Our dedicated Newsposter Staff have been given the week off, while CJPC (who is currently quite sick) and myself have been trying to sort things out.

Everyone we speak with on IRC say they can access the Site/Forums OK, and we can ourselves, however, traffic analytics tell us over the last week or so over there is nearly a 50% drop... most visible accessing the Forums. Obviously summer is upon us and people are on vacation, but not 50% of the PS3News Forum Members are all at once

We are trying to troubleshoot this, and once things are back to normal we also have some nice PS3 Dev progress to share as well.

Thanks for your patience while we...
