UFC President: EA Sports Responsible for MMA Video Game War

400°
267w ago - UFC president Dana White has a simple message for fighters dreaming of competing in the world-famous octagon: Don't do business with EA Sports.

In an edict that started as a rumor on Internet message boards, White stated after Saturday's historic UFC 100 event that he was "at war" with the popular video-game developers and that those that side with EA Sports will find themselves out of the UFC's good graces.

But perhaps surprising to some, White insists it was EA Sports that fired the first salvo in the still-developing controversy.

To quote: "It's easy to sit on the other side of the table and judge me on how I react to stuff like this," White said. "But let me tell you what - I've been in the trenches for almost 10 years, and I've been dealing with all these businesses, and EA was one of them."

EA Sports holds the publishing rights for several of the market's most successful sports-related video games, including the Madden NFL, FIFA, NASCAR and Tiger Woods PGA series. White said the UFC had hoped to join the ranks of those titles, but the California-based EA Sports declined to discuss the possibility.

"EA Sports told us, 'You're not a real sport,'" White said. "'We wouldn't touch this thing. We want nothing to do with this.'"

Hands-On: EA Sports Fight Night Round 4

200°
276w ago - At a recent EA event I had a chance to play Fight Night Round 4 against the game's producer, Brian Hayes.

I may have never become too involved in the original, but enjoyed enough time with it that I was able to quickly see the changes in Round 4 first-hand. And there were a lot of changes.

To quote: It's safe to say that Fight Night Round 4 is likely one of the best looking sports game ever made. A bold statement, yes, but that doesn't mean it isn't true. Boxers are modeled wonderfully, and the game's enhanced engine really takes advantage of all of the power this generation has to offer.

As I sat talking to the developer the boxers stood beside each other, bobbing and weaving. As they moved, sweat dripped off their chins from time to time. It wasn't a steady drip as if from a leaky faucet, but an occasional surge of water, like the kind that would flow from the pores of a man about to exchange punches with another while standing shirtless below bright lights. For a moment I was taken aback, amazed at the attention to detail in the seemingly unimportant sweat of the boxers. The attention to detail didn't stop there.

After a bit of time I took the controller and started playing, figuring my way around the controls. With a few small tweaks, it controls nearly exactly like...

The day has finally come! Phase one of the EA SPORTS Complex has been unleashed and it is high time that all of you sports fanatics log in to PlayStation Home, explore this hugely interactive space, try your hand at the available mini-games, and check out all the teasers and trailers that await your prying eyes.

Out of the proverbial box, [Register or Login to view links] has two casual multiplayer mini-games for you to challenge your friends to: A whole floor of poker tables and the new EA SPORTS Racing game.

The former allows for up to 8 players per table to indulge in high stakes tournament-style Texas Hold 'Em and the latter lets you put the pedal to the metal and compete for the best time against 3 other users in a formula-style race.

The Complex - much like the PlayStation Home platform - will evolve over time. Currently scheduled updates include the EA SPORTS Golf mini-game (where users can test their stick skills at an indoor driving range) leaderboards, poker bracelets and a rewards system. As new titles are announced, content within the space and additional game-specific achievement rewards will be added.

MTV Tours the Impressive EA Sports PlayStation Home Space

50°
287w ago - MTV recently toured EA Sports upcoming PlayStation Home Space. To quote:

The Sports Complex is an EA Sports shrine and gaming center. It is still being built, scheduled for a partial April opening. By the time it is launched, two of a planned three games will be available within it: racing and poker, with a golf game to follow.

What you see in this post is what the Sports Complex will get you, for free, through Home. But what's hard to see is how it works. An EA rep walked me through it.

The most important thing to note for Home skeptics is that EA is trying to make boredom in this virtual place impossible. The space is designed to keep as many as 70 people busy with something, though Sony's 'Home' service starts pulling people into duplicate 'instances' of its regions once about 50 people are in it.

The 70 or so stations are spread across the gaming activities and other hangout areas. For example, there will be eight golf stations, accommodating two groups of four people. There are three tiers of poker tables, each seating up to eight players, with slots for other 'Home' users to secure a spot in the next round.

The games are designed as feature...
