Sony Unveils PlayStation Plus Treats, Includes LBP2 PS3 Open Beta

200°
190w ago - Sony PlayStation Network Product Manager James Thorpe has unveiled the treats for PlayStation Plus subscribers this week, which include Dead Nation and Hustle Kings avatars and access to the LBP2 PS3 Open Beta.

To quote: Hi Guys, it's already time to give you the first installment of your festive December treats. So here goes...

You may have seen Alex's post last month about LittleBigPlanet 2 and the amazing new game coming to PSN on 15 December: Sack Boy's Prehistoric Moves.

We thought you guys might like this so we are giving it to you completely free and one week before everyone else on PSN. New, free and early!

The second treat today is also LBP2 related. We were gutted we couldn't give you the first LBP2 beta exclusively but to hopefully make up for it a little, we have managed to persuade the guys to extend the LBP2 beta for you Plus members.

The numbers are unfortunately limited but if you have been chosen then you should have already received an email and are hopefully playing, creating and sharing as we speak.

Another treat for this month is something you have been asking for: There are two Dead Nation Avatars now available for download. Check out your exclusive 'Hero' and 'Heroine' avatars today.

And finally,...

Download: PS3 Open Manager Theme Editor Installer / PS3 Open Manager Theme Editor Installer (English)

A release is coming soon, and below is a rough translation on the PlayStation 3 homebrew application:

I tried to make a customized theme for my Open Manager, but having to edit the position of the texts a lot of times, without knowing where will they go, and how would the layers be, in which order would they look better, etc... I ended a little bit tired and mad...

So, seeing that people really like to make their own themes, I'd like to make the work of making themes easier, and I'm developing a theme creator/editor... I'd like to introduce you my first addition to the PS3 Scene.

Features:

• Compatible with the last version of Open Manager
• It works with the 8 layers of Open Manager
• It edits the INI from a nice GUI and allows you to see the changes in real time.

It's capable of sorting...

Download: PS3 Th@nkY0u Manager

To quote: This is a small project I made to make Open Manager a little more "aesthetic."

It is a project based on a base version of "Open Manager", adding various fixes including same "SynaPS3" fix.

Needless to list the features. Test it.

195w ago - Update: KinectMan2 has now posted a video (below) of a non-open source version he did, and Marcan [Register or Login to view links] he did the same with his open-source [Register or Login to view links] as well. Below are the videos!

With the recent Kinect release for XBox 360, a bounty has been offered by Adafruit Industries for an open-source Kinect driver.

The challenge found on Adafruit's [Register or Login to view links] states the following, to quote:

What do we (all) want?

Open source drivers for this cool USB device, the drivers and/or application can run on any operating system - but completely documented and under an open source license. To demonstrate the driver you must also write an application with one "window" showing video (640 x 480) and one window showing depth. Upload all of this to GitHub.

How get the bounty ($2,000 USD)

Anyone around the world can work on this, including Microsoft Upload your code, examples and documentation to GitHub. First person / group to get RGB out with distance values being used wins, you're smart...

Guide to Compile PS3 Homebrew via PSL1GHT Open-Source SDK

550°
195w ago - Today Scognito has [Register or Login to view links] a guide on how to setup a build environment for compiling and running PS3 homebrew using the PSL1GHT open-source SDK.

To quote: With the breaking out of PSJailbreak this summer, the homebrew sceene didn't wait so long to appear on PlayStation 3.

So we are finally talking about the possibility to run our own unsigned code, using any of the available dongles (you can even build one yourself).

Before actually start writing our application it is necessary to build our development envirement. For doing this we need a toolchain and a SDK: I'll use ps3chain and PSL1GHT.

The latter one is very young (project started 29-oct-10) and continously mantained, so the are chances that something may not work as you would expect.

Updating git daily, reporting bugs and contributing is appreciated

Prerequisites

First of all we need to set our PS3 dev directory and some system variables, as well as all software needed to build our toolchain.

This guide is written for user with Ubuntu 10.10 32bit,...
