Sony Justifies Pre-Order-Only Killzone 2 Demo, Dates PSN Version

50°
289w ago - Sony has attempted to justify its policy in North America where gamers will only get the KillZone 2 demo if they pre-order the game.

MTV Multiplayer received this response from Scott Steinberg, vice president of product marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America:

Offering a playable demo to motivate preorders speaks to our confidence in the appeal of a game such as Killzone 2. We take this approach when we are convinced that the experience will cement a consumer's interest in purchasing.

Retailers will then merchandise those demos within their stores and online to maximize their visibility. Through this process, consumers are often times able to reserve their copy of the final game, which provides an incentive to purchase and helps seal the deal.

We also offer demos on the PSN, which we have done in the past with great success, and will continue to make that available. Killzone 2, for example, will have a downloadable demo launch in North America the week that the game is launching, for consumers who prefer that option.

And what if you don't pre-order "Killzone 2″ but want to try the demo? It's slated for release as a download from the PlayStation Network on PS3 for Thursday, February 26, a day before the game's official release date. That...

Killzone 2 Only Using 60% of PlayStation 3 SPU's Overall Power?

100°
295w ago - Speaking in IGN's latest Play Beyond podcast, Jeff Haynes revealed that even during the heaviest loads, Killzone 2 utilizes roughly only 60 per cent of the PlayStation 3 SPU's.

"It's incredible to see huge levels and see the deferred rendering and note that on all the SPU's, even on the heaviest load were coming up to about 60%," Haynes said.

"They weren't coming close to maxing out. They had about 40% of space before they started tripping or saw slow down on some of the processes."

Furthermore, Haynes noted that the preview codes recently distributed to various media outlets were of an alpha build of the title, and have since been polished up. Visiting Guerilla Games in Amsterdam, Haynes was shown an updated version of the game, mid to late beta, noting that elements such as lighting, cut scenes, glitches, load times, have all been optimized.

Killzone 2 is due out exclusively on PlayStation 3 on February 27, 2009.

Wii Speak Channel Only for Wii Speak Purchasers, Don't Buy Used

50°
298w ago - A Nintendo rep has said that the only way gamers will be able to download the Wii Speak Channel is with a "Wii Download Ticket Number" that is printed in a pamphlet that comes with the Wii Speak microphone.

This apparently means that if you buy the peripheral it used, you won't be able to use it as you can't download the Wii Speak Channel.

To quote: But there's a catch, a fine print surprise. There is a pamphlet packaged with the peripheral that includes a 16-character code, a "Wii Download Ticket Number," to be used for downloading the Wii Speak Channel.

According to the pamphlet, this code "cannot be replaced by Nintendo or your retailer if it is lost or stolen."

Resistance 2: Thanks for Not Using a 5GB HDD Install, 350MB Only

400°
299w ago - Game installs on the PlayStation 3 have become a huge problem. We've seen hard drives fill to capacity already and there looks to be no end in sight.

I was pleasantly surprised when Resistance 2 nixed that huge 5GB install that most games these days require.

This isn't to say there's no install. The game drops roughly 350MB of data onto your hard drive, which takes about 90 seconds. Not bad at all considering games like NBA 09: The Inside use over 2.5GB of precious hard drive space.

I just wanted to give credit where credit is due. Kudos, Insomniac! Good job stepping in and putting a stop (or at least a pause) the problematic game installs that are plaguing the PS3. Keep up the good work!

Atlus Announces There Will Be Only One Version of Persona 4

50°
299w ago - I don't know about anyone else, but I've been holding onto two copies of Persona 3 for quite some time now. The original came in this nice box with an art book, and then FES came out and I just couldn't bring myself to give up to original. So there you go.

Will the same thing happen? Atlus says no.

"We are today able to announce that at no point in the future will we announce the release of a "FES" version of Persona 4," said Tim Pivnicny, Vice President of Sales and Marketing. "The very finest, most definitive version of Persona 4 will be the one released on December 9, 2008."

Now if only we could convince them to quit letting places like amazon release awesome pre-order junk, I will be extremely happy. I want my tele-teddy darn it!
