Air Force May Suffer Collateral Damage on PS3 OtherOS Removal

800°
246w ago - Although not surprising, today ArsTechnica.com reports that the US Air Force may suffer collateral damage (especially since investing in 300 followed by another 2200 consoles for research) due to Sony's recent decision to remove the OtherOS functionality via PS3 Firmware 3.21 from the PlayStation 3 entertainment system.

However, the Air Force stated they are aware of the recent class action lawsuits against Sony over this matter, to quote:

"We will have to continue to use the systems we already have in hand," a representative told Ars, "but this will make it difficult to replace systems that break or fail.

The refurbished PS3s also have the problem that when they come back from Sony, they have the firmware (gameOS) and it will not allow Other OS, which seems wrong.

Class Of Heroes 2G - PSP HD Port Slated for PS3 This Summer

250w ago - According to [Register or Login to view links], a HD port of Class of Heroes 2 for PSP is slated for release on Sony's PS3 entertainment system under the title Class Of Heroes 2G in mid-July, 2010.

Famitsu now lists Class of Heroes 2G in their table of contents as a PS3 game, and early reports state it will include full voice acting and an expanded character edit mode.

To quote: "After the two installments of Class of Heroes that were released on the PSP, Acquire announced today that Class of Heroes will be coming on the PlayStation 3.

The game will be a remake of the second Class Of Heroes that will feature full voice overs, updated graphics, and a lot more. ZeroDiv will be the one managing the remake on the PS3."

GeoHot Releases Sample PS3 Linux Isolated SPU Loader Code

1000°
261w ago - Today GeoHot has released sample PS3 Linux isolated SPU loader code for those with OtherOS to experiment with.

To quote: "Right now, I'm playing with the isolated SPEs, trying to get metldr to load from OtherOS. Interesting thing, I am not using the exploit. I always assumed the enable isolation mode register was hypervisor privileged.

It's not, it's kernel privileged, which means using hypervisor calls you can all get to it. So, get to hacking. [Register or Login to view links] is the code I am playing with.

I'm not that opposed to releasing the exploit, but I think the majority of you are going to be disappointed, even if you do get it working. Unless you have pushed the HV to it's limits, this exploit really isn't going to do much for you... yet.

So install OtherOS and start playing around. If people start coming up with convincing reasons why they need the exploit to go further, I'll release it. It's just a waste to release if people can't make use of it.

As far as the GPU goes, I have full access to the GPU memory space 0x2800... But without a driver, it's useless. 3D video card drivers are notoriously hard to write, look at the ATI and NVIDIA ones for linux. The best are still the closed source manufacturer ones.

I'm not even sure...

Rumor: Sony's PS2 Emulator Won't Arrive on PS3 Until Late 2010

500°
266w ago - According to PSInsider (linked above), the recently discovered PS2 emulator Sony has added won't arrive on the PS3 console until late 2010.

While PS3 Firmware 3.15 added support for Sony's PSP emulator to the PlayStation 3, PS2 fans may want to check out Open PS2 Loader for PS3 until fall of next year.

To quote: "Sony PS2 emulator will probably WON'T be published until end of 2010 (yes, next year) as for this and next year Sony will still supporting all PS formats including PS2.

The PSP emu for PS3 was meant to be connecting PSPgo / PSP-4000 to PS3 via bluetooth and play via DualShock / Sixaxis so PS3 would just transfer the audio and video.

Only 'emulating' parts would be allowing PS3 pad control PSP game but calling it emulating it's really nonsense."

Gran Turismo 5 Slated for Summer 2010, PS3 Demo Next Week

700°
267w ago - During a short demo presentation of Gran Turismo 5 earlier this week, SCEA Associate Producer Chris Hinojosa-Miranda re-confirmed the March 2010 GT5 PS3 release for Japan.

Without getting too specific, he then revealed that Sony was eying a vague "Summer 2010" release, which hopefully means we'll see it before leaves start falling off trees next year.

However, those seeking to get their hands on Gran Turismo 5 sooner will find a PS3 demo on PlayStation Network next week.

To quote: "Interestingly, Hinojosa-Miranda had mentioned to me that he was traveling the U.S. in the coming week to photograph cars for Polyphony's reference material. With nearly 1,000 cars in the game, it's not that big of a stretch to think that they may still be working to flesh out the game's roster.

And while he wouldn't confirm how far along they were towards completing Gran Turismo 5 development, he did say this work wasn't necessarily for the current game.

"It's not for Gran Turismo 5 or a DLC release," he said, clarifying that it's constantly building on its reference material archives. After years of development and multiple Gran Turismo titles, how else do you think it's filling those garages but with non-stop research?

On the subject of DLC for the title, he said...
