The gameplay retains the series' signature weight and heft, so you never feel like you're ice-skating through the the meticulously detailed environments. But thanks to a host of refinements from Guerrilla Games, Shadow Fall is undeniably a faster, more fluid, and more satisfying Killzone. Call it Killzone reborn.

DualShock 4 plays a significant role here, with its massively upgraded ergonomics and shooter-friendly L2 and R2 triggers (though Shadow Fall will allow you to use the classic L1 and R1 as well, if you prefer).

After my play session, Game Director Steven ter Heide commented that the Shadow Fall no longer uses aim assist, making it a truer test of skill. And you'll never even notice that change, given the high responsiveness of DualShock 4's comfortable new analog sticks.





Of course, the spectacular graphics don't hurt...

67w ago - Guerrilla Cambridge Senior Producer Mark Green outlined how to survive the Killzone: Mercenary Multiplayer PlayStation Vita Beta below today.

To quote: We're just a few weeks away from the launch of Killzone: Mercenary, but gamers won't have to wait that long to cut their teeth on Mercenary's impressive multiplayer suite.

The team here at Guerrilla Cambridge is expanding the multiplayer beta to give the servers a good test before Mercenary launches on September 10th in North America for PS Vita.

For North American users, the Open Beta for Killzone: Mercenary will be made available to PlayStation Plus subscribers on August 20th (after the Store update). Those of you who went out of your way to acquire special beta access vouchers - Perhaps through a certain promotion on PS Home? - will also be granted early access!

Then, on August 27th (after the Store update), the beta will open up further to become available to all North American PS Vita owners, coming to a close on September 3rd.

Killzone: Mercenary MP Open Beta in Late August, Closed Beta Live Now

69w ago - Sony PlayStation Public Relations Manager Aram Jabbari revealed today that the Killzone: Mercenary MP Open Beta for PS Vita arrives in late August while the Closed Beta is live now.

To quote: We're excited to announce that the Killzone: Mercenary closed multiplayer beta (for which signups were held a short while ago and already concluded, if you're just tuning in now) is now LIVE. To those who got in, you should already have the necessary information to jump in and get going.

Note: If you received a multiplayer Beta voucher as part of the promotion via PlayStation Home, please note that your voucher is for the Open Beta in late August, not for the closed Beta launching today.

To those of you who didn't get in or are just hearing about this now, worry not: we're going to open the multiplayer beta right on up in late August - details will be coming really soon, so stay tuned.





And really, who doesn't like a good open beta? They're a bit draftier. They let in more natural light. Better for Agoraphobes and such.

70w ago - Killzone Community Editor Victor Zuylen made available a Killzone: Shadow Fall PS4 Q&A today detailing the creation of Echo and Sinclair.

Below are the details, to quote: As we announced earlier this month, we've secured the amazing talents of David Harewood and Jamie Gray Hyder to portray two key characters from Killzone: Shadow Fall - VSA director Sinclair and Helghast intelligence operative Echo.

But who exactly are Sinclair and Echo, and how did their character designs come about? We asked Assistant Art Director Dan Calvert to shed some light on these enigmatic characters.

PlayStation.Blog: Who are Sinclair and Echo, and what roles do they play in KZ:SF?

Dan Calvert: Sinclair is the head of the Vektan Security Agency - his job is to make sure the balance of power favors Vekta without escalating the cold war into open conflict. Part spymaster - part diplomat, and with a shrewd strategic mind, he is Lucas' direct CO and mentor.

Like Lucas, Echo is an elite operative tasked to cross the wall, and her mission puts them on a collision course. She is extremely dangerous; an equal but opposite reflection of the player character.

To quote: At a recent event in New York, I got my hands on Guerrilla Games' upcoming PS4 launch title, Killzone: Shadow Fall.

The game will feel instantly familiar to anyone who's followed the long-running series, but there are enough new features and additions that even the most battle-worn Helghan veterans will want a primer before heading into battle.

The tools at your disposal in Shadow Fall are many: In addition to the requisite bullet-driven armaments, the new OWL drone gives you an enormous tactical advantage. Swipe up on DualShock 4's touchpad to set the OWL into attack mode, point your crosshairs at a space in front of an enemy and press L1 to deploy the drone, which both attacks its target head-on and serves as a distraction while you flank around the other side. The OWL is also incredibly useful when trying to keep track of one of the game's teleporting enemies. Just follow the bullets.
 
The OWL has other uses, too. Swipe left on the touchpad to put the drone into stun mode, which will incapacitate foes and nearby electronics.
