Set to launch April 15th for $54.99, it's slated to coincide with the release of GT5 Prologue. Oh yes, feel those engines roar through your controller and make your SIXAXIS-wielding friends envious...like they're just playing a video game or something.

New PS3 DualShock 3 hits FCC

50°
354w ago - The new PS3 controller DualShock 3 has finally hit the FCC for testing. Not long to go now until North American gamers can experience the joys of rumble once again on the Playstation platform.

To quote: The original Playstation 2 rumble controller was hailed as one of the most innovative advances to console technology at the time. Yet this feature was surprisingly absent from the Playstation 3 when it was announced about this time last year.

Sony never admitted why it opted to ditch the rumble technology, though a pending lawsuit between Sony and Immersion seemed the likely culprit. Not only did gamers miss the rumble technology on their PS3 systems, but also game developers were also disappointed at the lack of rumble feedback on the PS3.

In March of 2007, DailyTech reported that Sony and Immersion ended legal battles paving the way for rumble technology to make its way into future PS3 controllers. In February, Sony said it was open to changing the PS3 SIXAXES controller, reinforcing the hopes of gamers and developers that rumble technology would come back to Sony console systems.

PS3 DualShock 3 rumbles all compatible PS2 games

50°
354w ago - Sony has confirmed to Eurogamer that all PlayStation 2 titles that support rumble and are compatible with PS3 will also rumble if you use the new DualShock 3 pad.

During last week's hands-on with the new controller, we noted that PS2 rumble seemed to be disabled. Since then, PS3 firmware 2.0 has quietly introduced support.

The news from Sony adds to anecdotal evidence from eager importers who reported success getting rumble out of games like Rez and Katamari Damacy.

PlayStation 3 games that already support the pad include MotorStorm, Resistance: Fall of Man and Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction.

So, another reason to put one on your shopping list, although you might have to wait a while if you opt for an import - the demand, not to mention price, seems pretty high. The official European and US release date for DualShock 3 is spring 2008.

Kojima Productions Says DualShock 3 Better DS2

50°
361w ago - Kojima Production's Assistant Producer Ryan Payton chimed in on the KP Report podcast this week with evidence that Shane and Ryan haven't lost their minds. Participating on the podcast are 1UP's own Mark MacDonald and frequent 1UP contributor John Ricciardi, and when asked by Ricciardi if "it's safe to definitively say that the rumble in the Dual Shock 3 is better than the rumble in the Dual Shock 2," Payton responded, "Absolutely, yeah. It feels better, and I think Shane experienced that too."

Unfortunately, that's about all that's said on the subject, as they immediately change topics to Devil May Cry 4. So if the rumbling is clearly better than the DualShock 2's, why has Sony stated the technology is the same? We'll remind you of Occam's razor: the simplest solution tends to be the right one.
