How Sony Can Improve the PlayStation Home Experience on PS3

292w ago - So, the Home Open Beta has launched, and while it's another step in the right direction, I still find little to no reason to fire it up.

Here are some ideas that Sony should be considering, if they already aren't.

More Character Customization

What's there already is good, but it's next to impossible to create a character that looks even remotely like me, especially in the face area.

The sad thing is that the underpowered Wii can make a recognizable Mii of me, as can in-game editors in The Godfather and, what came closest so far, Fight Night Round 2. In fact, Sony should look closely at the Fight Night character creation, because I'm convinced that it can do anything.

In addition to this, allow our Home avatars to be used outside of Home - maybe in games like BUZZ! Quiz TV, or sports games, etc. just like the Xbox 360 avatars and Wii's Miis.

The limited options that currently exist for PSN account icons are ridiculous. There are 23 pages or so, most of which are crap. Allow us to set our PSN avatar to a headshot of our Home avatar, and this would solve that problem in one fell swoop.

Complete XMB Functionality

The XMB is fast, sleek, and simple and really, pretty bloody awesome. But Home is supposed to be this new...

Is Sony Sabotaging the PlayStation 3 Console and Blu-ray?

292w ago - Washington Times writer Sonny Bunch has released a very controversial article saying that instead of trying to bolster the PS3 and Blu-ray as much as possible, Sony is hindering and sabotaging the system and the format. Sounds crazy, right? Well, he actually makes a few good points.

First of all, he criticizes Sony because in these bad economic times, instead of releasing a cheaper console, they released a more expensive SKU:

We're dealing with the worst economy since the Carter years. Deflation looms. Businesses desperately need a big holiday push to boost the bottom line. The Nintendo Wii remains the most popular system in the land, and, at $250, isn't necessarily a budget buster. Xbox 360 has made serious inroads by dropping the price of its core system to $199. So how did Sony respond?

By releasing a new version of the PS3... that's $100 more expensive. Yes, it comes with a game, and yes, it has more hard-drive space, to which I respond: Who cares? Was the marketplace clamoring for more memory from the PS3? Is that why its market penetration is so low compared to its predecessors and competition? What were the Sony execs thinking?

I agree with the author fully on...
 

Sony Finally Gets the PlayStation 3 Out of the Gutter

292w ago - It's been a long time coming for Sony; gaining the 300k mark for the PS3, that is. The latter part of this year wasn't looking too good for the big black box, but some holiday consumer spending put some ample steam under the PS3's numbers for November.

The Associated Press reported some hefty numbers from the NPD, all the way across the board: for the Wii, the Xbox 360 and the PS3.

Nintendo, as usual, ranked number one with console sales for the Wii. Nintendo's motion-movement killer sold an estimated 2 million units. The Xbox 360 wasn't too far behind, though it looks sad for Microsoft because the Xbox 360 [Arcade] sells for less than the Wii and it only managed a respectable, yet disappointing 836,000 SKUs sold.

It was the PlayStation 3 that showed signs of life, despite selling a little less than half of the 360's numbers. Sony's console did an impressive 378,000 units for the month of November, and considering that this is the PS3 we're talking about (and no price drop in sight) that's not half bad.

Heck, the PS3 actually passed up the PS2 with flying colors -- the last gen system is finally showing its age (and uselessness) with consumers purchasing only 206,000 units last...
 

Sony Didn't Intend the PlayStation 3 to Succeed as a Console

292w ago - Everyone was probably glad to know that the PS3 managed to sell more than a 150k during November. And while many Sony fans would see the glass half full, analysts and skeptics would see the glass half-empty, considering that the PS3 and PS2 combined didn't come close to the Xbox 360 or Nintendo Wii's numbers.

However, selling a console during this generation wasn't Sony's priority for the PS3 to begin with. Good numbers or not, Sony already accomplished what they wanted from their third-generation console.

It all started back in E3 2005 with an article on IGN comparing Sony's and Microsoft's console specs. A lot of people are going to say "But the specs have changed since then."

However, it's not the specs that gave away the PS3's general purpose, it was the intention of the specs. The one comment that stands out above them all in the article is the one that pinpoints what the PS3 has displayed in realtime gameplay (at present) and for what Sony was really using the PS3 for, as the comments states:

"Sony's CPU is ideal for an environment where 12.5% of the work is general-purpose computing and 87.5% of the work is DSP calculations. That sort of mix makes sense for video playback or networked waveform analysis, but...
