CES 09: MTV Networks Partnering with Sony's PlayStation Network

50°
294w ago - Programming from Viacom's MTV Networks is set to come to PlayStation Network's video service, Sony Computer Entertainment America announced at CES on Thursday.

The partnership between the two companies involves MTVN brands MTV, VH1, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, Spike, Logo, CMT, The N, TV Land and Atom. TV shows that will be available for purchase via PSN include South Park, SpongeBob SquarePants and Love Bus with Bret Michaels, and eventually new shows due to premier in spring.

In November 2006, Microsoft announced a similar deal to bring programming from MTV Networks to Xbox Live. For companies like Microsoft and Sony, video delivery has become more than just a peripheral feature as digital distriubtion technologies improve and consumers lap up the content at a rapid pace.

Sony's video delivery service hosts around 1,200 movies and over 3,000 TV episodes, which can be viewed via PS3. Standard definition content can be transferred for viewing on PSP.

Proof Paedophiles Are Using Home on the PlayStation 3 Console

294w ago - During a recent opinion piece, one of our writers recalled an anecdote of a disturbing experience that happened on Sony's PlayStation Home recently. The snippet in question reads as follows:

"While doing some research on 'who actually buys HOME clothing' we happened across a fellow in a cowboy hat (who we'll call 'Jed'). After telling Jed who we were and why we were here doing research, we had an interesting discussion about why he bought the cowboy hat, and virtual belongings in general.

Jed told us that he'd done up his apartment with furniture and he invited us over to see it all. Being that it was related to the conversation and the Home research we agreed.

The distant tingle of an alarm bell sounded when I materialized in Jed's apartment. Everything was super colour-coordinated, ultra chic, and the furniture had been surgically arranged in the room (possibly with a virtual laser level). "Nice feng shui" I mumbled. "I know!" he typed back enthusiastically.

It was at this point that I applied this virtual scene to its real life equivalent: I'm currently standing in a trendy house with a cowboy (who, just now, has decided to halve my personal space) and we're talking about the sensible placement of his furniture.

Houston, we may need to abort...

CES 2009: Sony Teases with High-Quality PlayStation 3 3D

294w ago - We've heard from many of you that 3D technology is something you're interested in seeing at CES, and Sony has one of the most impressive displays of 3D at their booth... but you won't learn anything about it.

"Don't get caught up with specs," the Sony representative told me. "We're not going to talk about specifications. This is just a look at what 3D could look like if Sony decided to move in this direction."

The idea was just to show the technology to people, to see if they would be interested in sitting at home, wearing a dorky set of black glasses, watching content in 3D.

I couldn't pry details about how the 3D affect was achieved, or if the display could turn any source into 3D, but what's clear is that, glasses or no, the 3D affect is amazing. Sony showed off Wipeout HD running in true 3D, and I was ready to whip out my credit card right there. Frank and I both agreed, this was one of the best demos of 3D technology we have ever seen.

"3D has come a long way, hasn't it?" the representative asked me. Sure it has, but give me some details. We can't get excited if all the press gets is a short tech demo. The crowd around the display was large, and filled with "ooohs" and "aaaahs."

This probably won't be the last 3D display we see at CES, but as a proof of concept,...

PlayStation 3 Had a Strong Holiday Season, Says Sony

50°
294w ago - Not to be bested in the battle of marketing spins by Microsoft, Sony has released figures of their own to spin people's perception of the PS3's success. Sony claims that the year-over-year drop in sales during November was simply an anomaly and that the system has actually seen much better numbers overall.

There was understandably some concern following the release of the November NPDs when the PS3 was the only system of the three current-gen consoles to sell fewer consoles than in November 2007. But Sony claims this was an unusual set of circumstances that can be traced back to "an abnormally strong month due to a price cut (with) the introduction of the 40GB PS3," referring to that SKU's release on November 2, 2007.

Sony Computer Entertainment America VP Ian Jackson said (via [Register or Login to view links]):

We've had a solid holiday season and have delivered consistent growth throughout this year. 2008 was a pivotal year for PlayStation with the best software line up in the industry, a dramatic expansion of PlayStation Network including the launches of the video delivery service and the beta of the PlayStation Home.

Early internal data points to an increase of more than 130 percent of PS3 hardware sales for the holiday season --...
