Freeview to get HD TV from 2009

50°
339w ago - Viewers will be able to watch high definition TV on Freeview from 2009, broadcast watchdog Ofcom has confirmed.

Ofcom says new technologies as well as the effects of digital switchover will enable more channels, including HD services, to be broadcast.

But viewers who want to watch the new services, which will first appear in the north-west of England, will need an HD-ready TV and a new set-top box.

Up to four free HD channels will be broadcast, including the BBC's service.

ITV, Channel 4, Five and Welsh network S4C will be invited to bid for three slots in which they can broadcast high definition TV, or other new services.

Ofcom says the new services should add to the "range and diversity" of TV in the UK, and contribute to public service broadcasting.

Viewers will have to wait until analogue TV is switched off in their area before they can see the HD channels. The last regions to change to all-digital signals, in 2012, will be London, the north-east of England and Northern Ireland.

At present, viewers can only watch HD services via satellite or cable, with most paying a subscription.

Free satellite TV service Freesat, which will include HD services from the BBC and ITV, will launch later this year.

100°
343w ago - Back in December 2007, Microsoft released an HD-DVD emulator toolkit for film studios and disc authoring companies to test out their projects before printing them off to an actual HD-DVD disc.

The piece of kit carried a hefty price tag - $2,999 to be exact. But now? It's free, seeing as HD-DVD is dead and all!

Refunds will be issued to those who previously had paid for the emulator in full.

400°
343w ago - Sony's UK boss Ray Maguire recently mentioned that in-game communication would be introduced to the PS3 this summer.

Daniel Dawkins, editor of PSM3 Magazine, has since said that this will bring the PS3 up to parity with X-Xox Live but that the key difference is that it's free.

To quote: TechRadar spoke with Daniel Dawkins, editor of PSM3 Magazine, this morning who told us: "This brings the PS3 up to parity with Xbox Live, the key difference being that it's free".

Dawkins added: "Sony is working its best to respond to what gamers want. The amount of evolution in terms of the firmware updates over the last year has been phenomenal."

TechRadar also spoke with Sony Computer Entertainment reps this morning. They informed us that they were currently not making any official announcements or issuing any further information on exactly how in-game comms on PS3 are set to be improved.
