Did the PlayStation 3 Have the Best Software in 2008?

200°
291w ago - Everyone is asking whether or not 2008 could be considered "the year of the PS3," and while it certainly closed the gap, the system still has a long ways to go from a sales perspective.

And while we're 100% certain the console will have the best exclusives in 2009 (do we really have to list those again?), this is a time for reflection. So...did the PS3 have the best software this year? Did the exclusives outstrip that of the competition?

As for the best games of the year, it had Grand Theft Auto IV, but there's no doubt that the driving software force in 2008 for the PS3 was Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Many will put this up against Gears of War 2 and GTAIV for their Game of the Year pick, and... well, the Wii doesn't even have games, does it?

Yeah. No, it doesn't. So it's a two-horse race for this year, and because most everything is multiplatform these days, maybe it's best to compare the PS3's "Big 3" against the 360's "Big 3."

Sure, stuff like GTAIV, Fallout 3, Dead Space, Rock Band 2, Guitar Hero: World Tour, Call of Duty: World at War, Devil May Cry 4, Far Cry 2, Burnout Paradise, and Soul Calibur III are multi-console hits, and most all are almost identical between the PS3 and 360. So, about that big 3: the way I see it, it's MGS4, LBP and Resistance 2 versus...

PlayStation 3 Graphics to Streak Ahead of XBox 360 in 2009?

300°
291w ago - The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 have been locked in a deadly battle for graphical supremacy since their respective launches.

Despite the PS3's much talked about processing power superiority, the 360 versions have managed to hold their own and often have the ability to outshine their PS3 counterparts.

Even though exclusive titles are said to be the true indication of a consoles graphical prowess, upcoming games like Resident Evil 5 have arguably some of the most intense visuals despite the multi-platform issue. It is becoming more apparent that when the Xbox is the lead platform, developers have more trouble porting it to Sony's console, but when that situation is reversed, both versions seem to reap the benefits, which is an interesting turn of events.

Gears of War - Mad World Cinematic

The 360 hit first with its wildly successful third person shooter, Gears of War. Utilising the Unreal Engine 3, EPIC crafted a visually impressive world, which was renowned for its oppressive, achromatic colours that depicted the harsh nature of war.

Though Uncharted: Drake's Fortune was certainly an impressive display of lighting and vivid environments, the PS3's big gun; MGS4 would be...

MLB 09 The Show - Hear Yourself Cheer In-Game on PlayStation 3

200°
291w ago - Today Public Relations Manager Alex Armour announced the following news:

MLB 09 The Show is officially announced today, ready to arrive this coming Spring on the PS3, PSP, and PS2. As the market leader in the baseball category, the team did not want to rest on their laurels and churn out a lackluster effort.

For this year, the team is including a number of new features and visual detail to once again bring the best and most realistic sports gaming experience available.

Last year we allowed players to import their own music from the PS3 hard drive so they could listen in game. Now, the team has gone a step further by creating the "My MLB Music" feature. This will allow players to use the in-game music editor to create snipits of music that can be saved and used as customized walk up music for their favorite players.

Additionally, have you ever screamed at your TV at a bad (or good) play when engaged in a sports game? Well now your voice can be heard IN THE GAME by allowing users to record their own fan chants and yells and integrate them seamlessly into the ambient crowd noise. It'll sound like you're really there.

Of course the team is all over the details and as the leading baseball game simulator out there, how could they not? Transitional lighting...

Sixteen PlayStation 3 Consoles Help Solve Black Hole Mystery

200°
291w ago - Scientists at the University of Massachusetts and Alabama have solved a mystery about the speed at which black holes stop vibrating. What's interesting about this discovery is that it was solved exclusively on a 16-strong PS3 cluster.

To quote: Using only the computing power of 16 Sony PlayStation 3 gaming consoles, scientists at The University of Alabama in Huntsville and the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, have solved a mystery about the speed at which vibrating black holes stop vibrating.

It may be the first time this kind of research has been conducted exclusively on a PS3 cluster: A related 2007 UMass Dartmouth/UAHuntsville project using a smaller PS3 cluster also used a "traditional" supercomputer to run its simulations.

The biggest advantage of the console cluster – the PS3 Gravity Grid – at UMass Dartmouth was the cost saving, said Dr. Lior Burko, an assistant physics professor at UAHuntsville.

"If we had rented computing time from a supercomputer center it would have cost us about $5,000 to run our simulation one time. For this project we ran our simulation several dozens of times to test different parameters and circumstances, so you can see how much that would have cost us.

You can build a cluster like this for perhaps $6,000, and then...

292w ago - Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 is the latest installment in the SMT series. SMT: Persona 3 was one of the best RPGs last year and Atlus' breakthrough title that got them the recognition they deserved, winning many new fans.

Many were excited about Persona 4's release date announcement, but many were also worried about the game being released this soon making them think it would've been rushed. In many interviews throughout the year, Atlus has been touting Persona 4 as an epic RPG, and they were right about that. But just how epic is Persona 4?

The game starts off with the main protagonist being summoned into the Velvet Room. In here, you are given the choice to name the main protagonist. Igor, the person who runs the Velvet Room, and his assistant informs the main protagonist that he will face a great tragedy and mystery, and it will be his mission to "seek out the truth" for the mystery. If he doesn't fulfill his mission, his future will be lost.

After waking up and leaving the Velvet Room, the main protagonist finally arrives in Inaba in which he will be staying with his uncle and cousin for a year due to his parents having to work overseas for a year. Shortly after his stay in Inaba, a mysterious murder occurs, and there are no clues or suspects.

This lone murder...
