H.264 Encoder is Coming to Sony's PlayStation 3 Console

50°
297w ago - Here's another way to harness the power of the PS3's Cell chip, to quote:

Fixstars Corporation of Japan has announced CodecSys CE-10, the first H.264 encoder that's designed specifically for the PS3. The product will be showcased at the National Association of Broadcasters show in Las Vegas starting April 20th.

The CE-10 software will be installed on a PC, but will somehow allow users to access the power of the PS3 as a way of accelerating video encoding. Fixstars is promising "ultra fast HD encoding" and "high quality low bit rate compression," targeted at the prosumer market at a prosumer price.

When questioned further on how the PS3 would interface with the CE-10 program, we were provided this rather useful document (pictured below).

It appears the PS3 will need Linux installed, severely limiting its accessibility to all but hardcore PS3 owners. Considering the rather specific demands of this application, perhaps that makes sense.

CE-10 will be available for purchase in June 2009. For burgeoning HD filmmakers, this should be a very cheap way of turning the PS3 into a powerful piece of video hardware.

Rock Band Unplugged Doesn't Interact With the PlayStation 3

50°
297w ago - Recently at a demo Harmonix told 1UP that Rock Band Unplugged doesn't interact with the PlayStation 3 console, stating there is no communication between the PSP and PS3 at all.

To quote: There have been a few attempts at interactions between PlayStation 3 and PSP, but it's hardly an industry trend.

Could that change with Rock Band Unplugged, Harmonix and MTV Games' portable take on their band game? Nope.

Despite some ideas we had about the PS3 version of Rock Band or Rock Band 2 sharing sharing downloadable content or unlocking features for Rock Band Unplugged on PSP, Harmonix told 1UP at a demo last week that's not the case and there's no interaction between the two platforms.

Maybe that could change with future iterations, though.

ThreeSpeech Says GoodBye, EU PlayStation Blog Hits Summer '09

50°
297w ago - Last week Sony's semi-official blog ThreeSpeech announced that they were making way for a new EU PlayStation Blog, and today they have followed-up with some goodbyes and news that Blog.EU.PlayStation.com will be coming in summer 2009.

To quote: So, this is it everyone. Goodbye from Three Speech. Over the years (sniff) we published over 1,500 stories, and you lot left over 35,000 comments.

Thank you all for sticking with us for so long. Thanks also for all your comments (both positive and negative), questions, suggestions for stories, news tips, solicited and unsolicited articles, friendly emails, photos, videos, tattoos and cakes.

Further thanks to those of you with sites of your own who linked to us and let us link to you.

All is not lost, you still have your PS3s and PSPs to keep you busy. Also, remember that there's an EU blog on the way - which is something you've been calling for for a long time on Three Speech, so it just goes to show that Sony were listening to us.

Make sure that the community that grew around Three Speech carries on there and that you continue to tell SCEE what you think. The future address will be [Register or Login to view links],...
