PS3 Dev: Sony PlayStation 3 Firmware Update 2.7 Hits This Month

200°
294w ago - Psyonix Studios developer Corey David let the cat out of the bag this week regarding upcoming PlayStation 3 firmware update 2.7.0.

In discussing a bug with the studio's game, Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars, David let slip in a [Register or Login to view links] that the update is scheduled for release later this month, to quote:

"I've been working with Sony trying to reproduce and solve the PSN sign-out issues some of you report.

Any info you can generate will be really helpful. Sony mentioned a bug they fixed with the next system software update (2.70) that might resolve these issues, but we have to narrow it down and verify it's the same problem to be sure it's that and not something we need to fix on our end.

IIRC it will drop later this month. And contain lots of fun new fixes. I'm excited about this one, lots of new stuff.

Though, I dont think I can mention any of them just yet.
-Psyonix-Corey"

It is not uncommon for developers to recieve advance copies of hardware updates so that they can ensure compatibility with their software. After the internet caught wind of the premature announcement the post was swiftly edited to remove any reference to the 2.7.0 release,...

Are Sony PlayStation 3 Exclusive Titles Cursed by the Media?

400°
294w ago - PS3 exclusives have a way of getting dissed by the general public and media before they are given a chance. The more superstitious fanboy might even call it a PS3 curse.

Let's run down the list: Lair became an industry whipping boy filling up YouTube with spastics that flailed SIXAXIS controllers with reckless abandon.

Ninja Theory's gorgeous Heavenly Sword wasn't measured on its own merits, but was held up against the standard that should be reserved for God of War.

Sega's stellar Valkyria Chronicles is seemingly invisible to the majority of mainstream gamers. Resistance 2 hasn't seen the sales a title of its caliber deserves. It's almost as if we've collectively banded together to repeatedly punish Ken Kutargi for his oft-echoed and ill-advised comments of "People will get a second job to buy the PS3." No, Ken. We didn't.

Then Killzone 2 dropped. If the PS3 has ever seen a game changer this is it. Strangely, the PS3 has been having a couple of great weeks. The launch of Yakuza 3 during the first week of March sparked a fury of PS3 console sales across the sea in Japan.

The PS3 outsold all other consoles including the dominant Nintendo handhelds in its home market. Over here, Killzone 2 moved 750,000 units in its opening weekend alone....

Video: Debut Split/Second Trailer for PlayStation 3 Available

200°
294w ago - As promised, last night's episode of [Register or Login to view links] brought the first look at Pure developer Black Rock Studio's upcoming racing title, Split/Second, for the PS3.

To quote: Keighley's ominous warning seems accurate - it appears to be trying to give Burnout a run for its money. However, rather than participating in high-speed (probably illegal) street racing for your own amusement, it looks like Split/Second will be placing your automotive exploits in front of an enraptured televised audience.

Split/Second will also add a neat gameplay element hinted at in the trailer - it looks like players will be able to "trigger" destructive events on the track in order to impede their opponents (or themselves, if they're not on top of their respective games).

Watch the [Register or Login to view links] if you want an example. The developers promise further info about the game next Wednesday.

PlayFire Unveils Official PlayStation Network Trophy Cards

250°
294w ago - Pictured below are the official designs for the PSN Trophy cards, which PlayFire.com has revealed to its members in conjunction with SCEE.

PlayFire took the bull by the horns when SCEA released its Trophy features on PlayStation.com and allowed users to sync their PlayFire cards with their Trophy info.

It's not automatic, but it's a lot faster than adding them individually. These new official cards, however, will "update automatically based on the Portal." We're not sure what the "Portal" is, but a Trophy card that updates automatically sounds great to us.

These Trophy cards will be available from eu.playstation.com (though you can use a PSN account from any region) at some point soon. We'll be sure to let you know when they go live.
