292w ago - Merry Christmas, Japan! While the Western world grows fat on its own laziness (not to mention a massive amount of Christmas food) Japanese game stores remain open to sell five new great PS3 games.

What's that strange smell, you ask? That's our pure, unadulterated jealousy. We really want to play White Knight Chronicles. Here's the release list:

US Games

• No new releases

EU Games

• No new releases

Asian Games

• Alone In The Dark
• Bioshock
• Far Cry 2
• Sid Meier's Civilization Revolution
• White Knight Chronicles

In case you're wondering, your PS3 is region free. So, yes, you can import White Knight Chronicles if you so wish. We're not sure if it's the sort of game that will get downloadable content, but if it does you'll have to get it from the Japanese PSN Store.

EA Releases Details on Reduction of Facilities and Work Force

50°
292w ago - Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:ERTS) today announced further details on a restructuring plan which will include consolidating facilities and reducing the work force.

Press Release: REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Dec 19, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) - EA expects the restructuring plan will result in annual cost savings of approximately $120 million and restructuring charges of approximately $55-65 million over the next several quarters.

The plan is intended to reduce EA's worldwide work force by approximately 10 percent or 1,000 people. The majority of these actions will be completed by March 31, 2009. This represents a four percent increase from the six percent reduction EA announced on October 30, 2008.

The restructuring also calls for consolidation or closure of at least nine studio and publishing locations. Among the facilities to be consolidated is the Black Box Studio facility in Vancouver, British Columbia. The Black Box development teams and associated game franchises will move to the nearby EA studio location in Burnaby, British Columbia.

EA is implementing a plan to narrow its product portfolio to focus on hit games with higher margin opportunities. The company remains committed to taking creative risks, investing in new games, leading the industry in the growing mobile and online businesses,...

EA Releases Spore De-Authorization Tool to Aid in ReInstallations

50°
292w ago - It's a bit late, but EA has finally got around to releasing a tool that will "de-authorize" Spore installations so the game can be more easily reinstalled in the future.

Download: Spore De-Authorization Tool

To quote: In a classic case of "better late than never, but not much," the tool has arrived three months after EA vowed to ease off on Spore's DRM restrictions in the "near future."

With the tool, Spore installations can be de-authorized at any time, even without uninstalling the game; if that happens, and the game is launched again in the future on that machine, it will attempt to automatically re-authorize.

Unsurprisingly, however, there are limitations to the tool's capabilities. It only works with current installations, so installations on older machines that were not cleared with the tool remain unavailable without a call to EA's customer service department.

The limit of five systems on which the game can be concurrently authorized also remains in place, and naturally it will do nothing to address complaints about hardware and software incompatibilities with SecuROM.

On the upside, the tool will help ensure that authorizations aren't unnecessarily lost...
