Sony PlayStation 4 / PS4 Development Tools and Engines Unveiled

76w ago - Today Gamasutra has revealed several Sony PlayStation 4 / PS4 development Tools and Engines for those interested in developing on the next-generation video game console with details below.

To quote: "It looks as if the NDAs for several tool-makers supporting Sony's upcoming PlayStation 4 were lifted today, as our inboxes have been flooded this morning with announcements.

Below are the tools and engines that should be available now for those of you developing on the PlayStation 4. We'll update this story should any other announcements come our way.

Update: Added NVIDIA's PhysX and APEX, and NaturalMotion's Morpheme 4.

FaceFX

Animation tool FaceFX is billed as "an advanced facial animation solution unique in its ability to liberate artists from the complexities of creating realistic dialogue and emotive characters." Recent titles that used the tech include Far Cry 3, Halo 4 and Dishonored. More information is available here (facefx.com).

xaitControl

Germany's xaitment is supporting the PS4 with xaitControl, its AI software package for game logic and character behavioral modeling.

Sony Rumored to Push for 16 Million PS4 Shipments in 2013

76w ago - Following up on the previous reports, today DigiTimes revealed that according to sources Sony is pushing for 16 million PlayStation 4 / PS4 shipments in 2013.

Below are the details, to quote: "Having high hopes on its PlayStation 4 (PS4) game console, Sony internally expects the machine's annual shipments to reach 16 million units in 2013 with the supply chain expected to start mass shipments in August, according to sources from PS4 component makers.

The sources pointed out that the PS4 will be manufactured by Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) and Pegatron Technology, and the player have just begun the processes of request for quotation (RFQ) for the related components. Therefore, the component shipments are unlikely to start until August, but should allow the machine to show up before the year-end holidays in 2013.

Sony shipped a total of 150 million Playstation 2s and 100 million Playstations and has shipped 77 million Playstation 3s over the past seven years."

Sony European PlayStation Store Updates for March 6th, 2013

To quote: First up, Tomb Raider, the acclaimed reimagining of Lara Croft from developer [Register or Login to view links], drops onto PlayStation Store this week. Look out for it on Friday.

On PS Vita, leap into action once more in Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 Plus as Ryu returns for another outing, this time on a journey to retrieve the Demon Statue. Buy early from PlayStation Store and get an exclusive costume pack (offer available until 26th March).

Elsewhere in the digital world, sports fans will be happy to see SCE San Diego's fantastic baseball sim MLB 13 The Show secure an EU launch for both PS3 and PS Vita. Also well worth a look are Germinator for PS Vita, and PS2 titles Midnight Club and Midnight Club 2.

PS Plus refreshes today with some great new content, including Mass Effect 3, Dead or Alive 5, Joe Danger 2 and discounts aplenty! Don't forget there's also still time to nab God of War HD if you haven't done so already. Oh, and Kratos fans might also be interested in our beefy GoW sale!

Sony PlayStation Mobile Spotlight: Switch Galaxy is Showcased

To quote: As with many games industry developers of a certain age I grew up with the classics: Atari 2600, Commodore 64 etc. with my very first gaming experience being on a Binatone with Pong.

One game that was always a favourite of mine was Dodge-em from the Atari 2600 which I would play for hours and hours. It was so frustrating at times, especially when it got quick, but that made me really want to beat it even more.

Back in 2011 we'd just finished development of [Register or Login to view links] and while thinking what we should do next, I thought about creating a 3D title that paid homage to Dodge-em.

So we started work and soon came to the conclusion that it was going to take way too long and be too difficult to make it enjoyable in full 3D, so we simply just got rid of the turns and made it straight instead.

We ended up with Switch, a mobile game that has gone on to be downloaded 1.7m times so far, which was so awesome considering it was a very simple endless runner that took six weeks to make. Even though it was simple, people loved it...
