Random PlayStation 3 HDD & RAM Dumping Bug Discovered

500°
272w ago - Today SKFU has shared a bug he found in PS3 Firmware 2.8 (although he said it should be present since 2.0 through 3.0) that allows you to dump random data from the PlayStation 3 HDD and RAM.

To quote: There's a little "bug" in the PlayStation3's NAT test which causes that you can dump random data from the HDD and RAM. Why exactly this appears; I don't know, yet. But well, it is interesting.

The way how to do it is pretty simple. Set up [Register or Login to view links] on the PC and activate ICS (Internet Connection Sharing).

Connect the PS3 with the PC via LAN and start Wireshark's logging/sniffing feature on the LAN device. Now go to Settings on the PS3 and start a Internet Connection Test in the Network option.

When the PS3 starts the NAT testing it will send default STUN packets together with several IP Fragments. Those both packet types will contain random data which the PS3 grabs from the HDD and/or RAM. There you go.

Updating RPG Persona: From PS1 to PlayStation Portable

50°
272w ago - Today the Devil Summoner 2 and Persona PSP Editor Nich Maragos has detailed what changes took place while updating the RPG Persona from PS1 to the PSP.

To quote: Like the president of the Hair Club for Men who's also a member, I'm not just part of the [Register or Login to view links] localization team, I'm also a fan.

I was there in 1996 as the original game was released on PlayStation to an audience of RPG fans who needed something to play until Final Fantasy VII's release, and to my surprise, the "filler" game ended up making as much or more of an impression on me as what I bought the system for.

But it wasn't perfect. The localization standards of the day meant it was compromised in a few respects; some major, some minor. The translators and editors at 1996-era Atlus actually acquitted themselves fairly well when it came to the dialogue: major story beats were properly conveyed, and the personality of the nine playable characters shone through pretty well.

As for the changes made to the rest of the game... well, at the time, there was nothing else in the series available in English, so it might not have been the highest priority to make sure it upheld series traditions like the modern-day Japanese setting or the mythological...

Sony: PlayStation 3 Firmware 3.00 Questions & Answers

850°
272w ago - Today PS3 Brand Manager Mark Bowles has made available a PS3 Firmware 3.0 Q&A on the European PlayStation Blog, as follows:

Many of you have been asking why we haven't responded to your complaints about last week's 3.0 update until now.

Sorry it's taken us a while to get back to you - this is obviously an emotive subject and there have been a lot of issues raised surrounding the release, so we wanted to make sure we could come back to you with a comprehensive response that answers your most frequently asked questions.

I don't like the "Fizz". How do I turn it off?

To turn the fizz off, go to the Theme Settings under Settings on the XMB, you can choose different themes from here. "Classic" is the default theme without the fizz.

Where's the game start chime gone? Why would you remove it?

One of the reasons we removed the PS3 jingle is that it was created to indicate the start of a game, but now we're offering non-game content such as Vidzone in addition to games. More importantly though, this change makes the loading time a bit quicker than before, which we think will be a noticeable benefit for all game users.
