NYCC 09 Preview: Wolfenstein for the PlayStation 3 Console

50°
270w ago - It's been 8 years since the release of the last real Wolfenstein game. After seeing Wolfenstein last week at an Activision event, JoyStiq debates whether there is any reason to revisit the franchise as follows:

There's a fine line between "classic" and "dated," and Wolfenstein finds itself on the wrong side of the fence. Fighting Nazis was a novel idea back in the series' prime, but it has since become a tired idea.

At first glance, Wolfenstein can only be described as generic. A FPS that has you crawling through World War II shooting Nazis? After dozens of Call of Duty and Medal of Honor games, to call the era overused would be an understatement.

Gameplay and setting aren't the only things dated about Wolfenstein. The visuals are lackluster, undoubtedly hindered by the aging idTech 4 engine (Doom 3 engine). We couldn't help but notice how poor the texture work was and how uninspired the levels looked through the entirety of the hands-off demonstration.

Although the visuals were rather bland, we were taken aback by the shoddy framerate. Yes, the game still has quite a bit of development left ahead of it, but this early look certainly didn't give us much confidence.

The core shooting mechanics don't look fun either. Where's the visceral combat? Where's cover? Where's...

MLB The Show '09 - True 1080p60 on the PlayStation 3 Console

100°
270w ago - The biggest improvement to the game comes from MLB 09's native 1080p support. The game runs at an uncompromised 1920–1080 native resolution with no AA.

In this respect, it's identical to the '08 game, but the key difference is that unlike the last game, MLB '09 displays a full 60 frames per second on the 1080p setting vs the 30fps of its predecessor.

The '08 1080p mode had few other losses on visual effects such as depth of field, which is retained and improved in both 720p and 1080p modes on the new game.

To quote: First of all, MLB The Show '09 is running at 60 frames per second at native 720p with 2xMSAA, unchanged from its predecessor. The character modeling and the texture details seem more or less on the same level with '08 as well, but close-in some improvements are evident: check out these shots of the players.

The most significant change however, is the crowd rendering, as it's much more diverse now with visible improvements on the level of detail. This is a great addition to '09, since its predecessor already had some of the best crowd graphics in any sports title, but its one shortcoming was the person duplication which becomes painfully obvious at times.

The one real...

Video: Live Headshot Killzone 2 Demo for PlayStation 3

100°
270w ago - In the Killzone 2 demo for PS3 you can do some serious damage to the enemy, but only if you acquire the special gun.

And here's just how you do that - throw a grenade at the guy that's standing on the roof of the building inside the warehouse. It will make him run and get blown up off the building and allow you to pick up his gun.

Below is a video of it courtesy of nublet06 via YouTube.. and the caption reads as follows:

"Footage of me killing some dudes with head exploding headshots with the sta14 gun in the demo of Killzone 2. Get this gun by throwing a grenade at the guy thats standing on the roof of the buildin..."

PlayStation Home 1.10 Patch Update Glitch, New Content Coming

250°
270w ago - As most are aware, Sony's PlayStation Home 1.10 Patch arrived a few days ago. The update weighs in at 77MB, and automatically downloads the next time you sign in.

However, GamerRiley of TheSixthAxis (linked above) has discovered a serious problem with the new PS Home 1.10 patch... it seems you can walk off the map, similar to PC games with the "NoClip" cheats!

Additionally, PlayStation Home Manager Locust_Star recently shared a peek into what to expect in terms of content updates in the very near future as follows:

• A proverbial boatload of game spaces - including spaces for Warhawk, SOCOM, Resistance, and many, many more (we'll announce more spaces in the coming weeks)...

• Of course, you're all aware of the EA Sports Complex. But let's just say that is coming sooner rather than later. And it's cooler than you imagined.

• These spaces will usher in the next phase of Home. They will begin to utilize this uber-powerful platform's true capabilities. We're talking unlocking items in the games you play from Home (and vice versa),...
