New 3D Technology May Put Your Face in PlayStation Home

50°
268w ago - In a recent [Register or Login to view links] with PhysOrg, Dr. David McKinnon, a researcher from Queensland University of Technology and the Australasian CRC for Interaction Design (ACID), has mentioned a revolutionary new piece of software that could put users' faces in Sony's PlayStation Home.

The background research took eight years to develop, allowing anyone to convert 2D images into 3D models... and eventually these could be uploaded to PlayStation Home.

To quote: "Another application is allowing people to create 3D models of their own face to use on their avatar in computer games or 3D social networking sites such as Second Life or Sony's Home."

The free prototype software can be found on the [Register or Login to view links] Web site.

To create a 3D image, the software requires between five and 15 consecutive, overlapping photos of an object. The photos must overlap each other by a minimum of 80 to 90 per cent.

SCEA President on Price Cut: PlayStation 2.5 for $299, Not PS3

200°
268w ago - During a recent [Register or Login to view links], President of Sony Computer Entertainment America Jack Tretton reinforced Sony CEO Howard Stringer's views on a PS3 price cut.

To quote: "We could've come out with a PlayStation 2.5 for $299 or less, and in the first two or three years it would sell extremely well," he explains.

"But there would be a point where people would be going, 'I am not really seeing the incremental leap.'"

"People are having short-term thinking–the platform is not even three years old," Tretton adds. "It was $599; it's now $399." He goes on to say that Sony isn't planning to snare all customers in day one, but over a ten year period.
