The Witcher Sells One Million Copies for PC

200°
285w ago - It's nice to get some figures that can be used to throw in the face of all those who claim PC gaming to be a dying breed.

The Witcher, and the just released Enhanced Edition has just broken the One-Million mark in sales. For those of you who haven't played it, I'd highly recommend it. As far as classic style PC RPGs go, this one is top notch.

The original release had a few pretty bad issues, terrible load times being the worst, but the Enhanced Edition is enhanced in every way.

With fixes and updates for the game as well as load time reduction of about 80%, the few problems with the game are resolved. But the Enhanced Edition does much more than just fix the game, truly earning the it's title.

Two additional campaigns as well as a campaign editor are included, to vastly increase replay value, the game's soundtrack and a cd with music inspired by the game, a short story that The Witcher was based on and a map of the world of The Witcher.

Easily one of the best games of the year, if you haven't already picked it up, do so, for 40 bucks, it's a great deal.

EA Reports $310 Million Net Loss, Cuts Workforce by Six Hundred

50°
285w ago - Word hit today through the grapevine that "massive" layoffs had hit at Electronic Arts. Initially we heard as much as 20 percent of the staff has been let go, but a quick check with Electronic Arts confirms that it was actually 6 percent, or about 600 positions.

"EA is continuing to make progress against our business plan, but we have the constant imperative to keep our costs in line as we grow our revenues and improve our margins," Electronic Arts spokesperson Mariam Sughayer told me. "Decisions that impact people's jobs are always extremely tough but all of the people affected will be treated fairly and respectfully."

"We have begun a cost reduction initiative which will include eliminating approximately six percent of our existing workforce - or approximately 600 positions. We will also reduce hiring and close some open positions that we had previously planned to fill this fiscal year."

"All parts of EA have reviewed their team sizes to adjust employee numbers. The goal is to ensure we're resourced in a way that allows us to continue to grow our revenues while at the same time keeping our costs under control and improving profitability. These changes will be announced to affected staff starting October 30."

"These are challenging economic times around the world, and it's...

Five Hundred Million GBP Bill for Xbox 360 Red Ring of Death

50°
302w ago - Computer giants Microsoft are facing a £500 million ($990 million) repair bill after their Xbox Elite consoles were hit by the notorious "red ring of death".

The console was originally thought to be immune from the problem, which permanently freezes the unit after a ring of green lights on the power control button turn red.

Now, hundreds of angry owners are sending back their £290 consoles, which are being shipped to Germany for repair. But the fault remains a mystery.

Jamie King, 16, from Gomshall, Surrey, said: "I got my Xbox in September and it packed up eight months later in June. First, it kept freezing, then it developed the red ring of death."

In a statement, Microsoft simply said: "The majority of Xbox 360 owners enjoy a great experience with their console. "Anyone with a problem should call Xbox customer service."

Last year, the company had to recall 230,000 Xbox steering wheels worldwide after complaints that they overheated. And it spent £500 million recalling power cords supplied with units made before 2003 after 300 caught fire and burnt seven gamers. To date:

- 12m Xboxes have been sold since 2005
- 33% Xboxes will overheat say experts
- 230k steering wheels were recalled in 07
