Netflix is Officially Confirmed to Hit the Nintendo Wii This Spring

After many rumors, today the [Register or Login to view links] has officially confirmed that online movie rental service Netflix will be expanding to the Nintendo Wii console this Spring.

Considering the Wii's small internal memory, it should come as no surprise that this service will require an [Register or Login to view links] in the Wii each time someone wants to watch a movie, just like the PS3.

But while it's speculated that the PS3 will be getting an onboard solution to this problem, the same shouldn't be expected for Nintendo's console.

To quote: "The real winner in this? Netflix, of course. The online rental company has become quite ubiquitous these days. Even now I'm sure that a strong majority of our readership has a little red envelope either ready to be watched or sealed and ready for the long journey back home to the nearest Netflix shipping center.

Hirai: PS3 Motion Controller is Slated for a Spring 2010 Launch

255w ago - PlayStation president Kaz Hirai has confirmed that the new PS3 Motion Controller technology dubbed 'the magic wand' is slated for a spring 2010 launch.

Speaking at Gamescom in Cologne last week, Hirai said that Sony required some "great software" in order for a successful launch.

To quote: "We are slating it for spring of next year," he told [Register or Login to view links].

"One of the things is that we just don't want to put out the controller. We need a great software that supports the controller at launch.

It's something that we've been working on for the longest time."
 

Sony's Expanded PlayStation Network May Debut in Spring 2010

263w ago - According to a [Register or Login to view links], PlayStation boss Kaz Hirai that said the bigger PlayStation Network may debut next Spring.

Sony's CEO Howard Stringer has also dropped hints on the PlayStation Network expansion, which is said to include a broader service, leaping from the PSP and PlayStation 3 to Sony branded televisions and other gadgets.

To quote: The service is said to make Sony devices "talk to each other efficiently," according to Stringer, that it will make it easier to handle digital camera images, edit video, share content and store whatever it is you download from a Sony device.

Fortune also reports that Sony has designs on making acquisitions that would "accelerate the effort," but plans to "start small" and roll out the new PlayStation Network over time.
 

Analyst: Prepare for Sluggish Spring, No New Consoles Until 2013

271w ago - Compared to last Spring's outlandish software sales figures (fueled by the release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl and GTA IV), this year's stats aren't inspiring much confidence in gaming industry investors.

In fact, many are anxiously awaiting the launch of new hardware to provide a quick sales boost - but according to industry analyst Michael Pachter (linked above), they shouldn't hold their breath: By his estimation, new hardware won't be hitting store shelves until at least 2013.

Pachter said that publishers would be hesitant to adopt new hardware considering their investments in the current console cycle have yet to adequately pay off.

There is one exception though - Pachter expects the [Register or Login to view links] high-definition Wii may appear some time in 2010.
 

Nintendo Goes Green for Spring with New DS Lite Green Bundle
